Geo News, the Dubai based Pakistani news channel has recommenced broadcasting, reported the local WAM news agency. Geo was taken off the air last month after pressure was applied to Dubai's authorities due to the channel's critical stance on the ongoing emergency rule in Pakistan. The recommencement follows negotiations between Geo and the Dubai Media City.

CNN International has teamed up with Thuraya, the UAE-based satellite operator, to deliver breaking news to the most remote areas of the world. Dubai Aerospace Enterprise, the global aerospace, manufacturing and services corporation and the Arab Media Group (AMG), the UAE's largest media group, have signed a memorandum of understanding to embark on a programme of strategic collaboration. The MoU states that TECOM should get approval from the NMC before issuing licences for any form of media whether in print, audio or TV.

Al Arab, Qatar's fourth Arabic daily newspaper, hit the newsstands last Sunday, reported Gulf News. The publication is being financed by a group of local business figures and will compete with Al Sharq, Al Watan and Al Raya. The paper hopes to address controversial local issues and has already focused on sponsorship legislation and local marriage laws which discriminate against Qatari women.

Dubai Studio City (DSC) has revealed that phase one construction of its commercial complex will be completed by December 2008. The 490,000 sqft complex will provide a range of office space suitable for production houses, small and medium business set-ups, freelancers as well as animation and graphic design companies. Construction on the complex got underway in August and will be completed in three phases.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has said it will not allows news agencies to send journalists to interview members of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) at their bases near Iraq's northern border, reported Reuters. The KRG blames media reports for exacerbating the ongoing tensions with Turkey, which has positioned 100,000 troops on the Iraqi border ready for possible incursions. Kurdish fighters have previously launched regular attacks against Turkish soldiers.
Office equipment provider Xerox Emirates is to establish a base within the International Media Production Zone (IMPZ), a member of Tecom Investments. Xerox Emirates, established in 1985, is a joint venture affiliate of the $16bn Xerox Corporation and the Hareb Al Otaiba Group. The IMPZ, with an initial investment of $270m, will cover 43m sqft when it is completed.

Pakistan's Geo TV has said it has been given the go-ahead to recommence hourly news bulletins on its entertainment channel in the Middle East, the UK and the US, but not in Pakistan, reported Gulf News. It is unclear if the permission for the broadcasts has come from the Pakistani government which forced the Dubai based Geo's news channel to stop broadcasting. Indeed, Geo News still remains off the air.

Pakistani news channel ARY One World is likely to recommence broadcasting shortly after negotiations with Dubai Media City and Pakistan's government, reported Gulf News. ARY's CEO Salman Iqbal said it would still not fall into line with the media code of conduct imposed after emergency rule was declared earlier this month in Pakistan. But Iqbal added that ARY had convinced Pakistan's government it did not have an 'agenda' against it.
