Lebanese Director Nadine Labaki has received the New Arab Women Forum Award for the screening of "Caramel" film. The film is the first to be screened by a female Lebanese director and was previewed during the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.
The Times newspaper will be relocating its business desk from London, UK, to the Middle East for one week during The Times Gulf Business Forum from 28th October-4th November 2007. The Times journalists will tour the region and discuss regional and global business issues with Gulf company CEOs, leaders and business leaders.
Hydra Properties has partnered with Showtime to co-produce a reality television show on real estate, reported Gulf News. The idea is select the best real estate project to be developed in the GCC with the support of Hydra and winner of the show will be given the financial resources to fund their project in the GCC.

The Jeddah Municipality has announced a new rule that will fine and cut phone connections of small businesses that paste illegal advertisements on houses and at public places, reported Arab News. The Municipality has received an upsurge of complaints from members of the public about advertisements defacing people's homes, doorways and public property.
Arab Media Group (AMG) and MTV Networks International have partnered to launch Nickelodeon Arabia, Arabic language free-to-air channel dedicated exclusively to kids across the Middle East in 2008. The channel will fall under Arabian Television Network, AMG's TV broadcasting arm.

A new report has found that the UAE is among nine Arab states to have improved its status regarding press freedom this year, reported Gulf News. The report, issued by Reporters Sans Frontieres, said the UAE was promoted to 65th position this year, compared to 77 in 2006. The index measures press freedom in 169 countries around the world.

MTV Arabia should begin broadcasting across the region before the end of the year, reported the UK's Financial Times. The channel will be based in Dubai and around 45% of its content will be produced locally with the remainder translated. MTV's local partner is the Arab Media Group which will provide budgets and arrange tie-ups with satellite operators.

The inaugural Dubai International Advertising Festival is to take place from March 31 to April 2 next year at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. The festival will include a seminar programme, a series of topical workshops, exhibitions and will culminate in the 2nd Dubai Lynx advertising awards. The event is being organised by the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.

Two journalists have been killed in Iraq in less than 24 hours, reported the AFP. Salih Saif Aldin, who worked for the Washington Post, was shot dead in Baghdad on Sunday, while, on Monday, a freelance reporter, Dhi Abdul Razak Al Dibo, was killed in an ambush near Kirkuk. Since the US led invasion of Iraq in 2003, 205 journalists have been killed in the country.
The inaugural Middle East International Film Festival has opened in Abu Dhabi at the Emirates Palace Hotel with the screening of Atonement starring Keira Knightly and directed by Joe Wright, reported Gulf News. A number of regional film stars were in attendance including Bollywood's Shiney Ahuja and Irfan Khan. The festival continues until October 19 and features a number of premieres.

The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information has issued a study which finds that online media do an inadequate job of reporting human rights causes in Arab countries. The report, 'Electronic Media and Human Rights,' analyzes the content of websites published by news media as well as human rights organizations such as aljazeera.net, alarabiya.net, islamonline.net, elaph.com, and copts-united.com. Plans to build the Louvre Abu Dhabi have been approved by the The French National Assembly under a 30-year cultural agreement between the UAE and France, reported WAM. The 24,000-square-metre branch of the famous Paris museum, designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, is expected to open in 2012 as part of Saadiyat Island's Cultural District project. Under the agreement, France's most prestigious museum will provide artworks and share its expertise.
