Qatar has begun development of a new Islamic satellite channel that will aim to offset the growth of religious channels that are believed to spread sectarian strife among Muslims, reported Gulf News. The Organisation of the Islamic Countries is promoting the initiative, which will focus on the true values of the religion rather than propagate division between Sunnis and Shiites.
Germany's Stroer Group has bought a 60% stake in the Dubai's Concept Outdoor as it makes its entry into the UAE's booming advertising market. Stroer is ranked number one amongst the German outdoor media players and is placed third amongst its European competition. The Group markets 255,000 advertising faces in twelve countries and will reach net sales of more than $650m in 2007.

MBC television station, the Middle East's major broadcasting channel with a significant presence worldwide, has a new online presence through an arrangement with Vignette, a leading provider of Next-Generation Web solutions. MBC.net offers 20,000 daily visitors programme information and clips. It is based on a flexible platform using Vignette's Next-Generation Web solution that can be easily replicated to enable new sites to be launched in a short time frame.
CNN is launching 'CNN Marketplace Middle East,' its first weekly business programme dedicated to the latest financial news from the Middle East. Hosted by veteran business correspondent John Defterios, the fifteen minute programme will air twice on Fridays and will be repeated on Saturday and Sunday. It will begin September 28.
The Amman Stock Exchange has launched a new program on its website to foster disclosure and transparency in the Jordan capital market, reported Jordan Times. The Market Watch Live program will enable investors to follow their investments live and view updates such as the top 5 buy and sell orders, latest 20 executed orders, and 10 best and worst performing companies in terms of stock price.
Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (Adnec) said it expects 1.5 million visitors, a 50% increase over initial projections, at the new Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre during 2008, reported Gulf News. Adnec is basing its prediction on soaring attendance records to date. More than 60 major exhibitions and conferences are already scheduled for next year.

A survey commissioned by Communicate magazine and focusing on 500 GCC based residents aged from 15-24 has revealed that Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has been ranked as the fourth 'coolest' celebrity. The top three comprised Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp and George Clooney. All those questioned lived in the GCC, with 227 residing in the UAE.

Bahrain's Ministry of Information has denied reports it has issued a circulation licence to Al Vefagh, the daily Arabic newspaper of the Iranian news agency, according to Gulf News. Last week, Mosayeh Naimi, the Editor of Al Vefagh, told a London based Arabic publication that his paper had received circulation licences in Bahrain, Oman and other Arab states. Naimi said he wanted to generate 'genuine communication between Arabs and Iranians '.
The head of an Iraqi group linked to Al Qaeda has offered $100,000 for the murder of a Swedish cartoonist regarding the recent blasphemous depiction of the Prophet Mohammed in the Nerikes Allehanda newspaper, according to Aljazeera.net citing agency reports. Abu Omar Al Baghdadi, leader of the Islamic State in Iraq, also offered $50,000 for the death of the paper's editor and threatened Swedish businesses in a message posted on a website.
The UK's Oxford Business Group (OBG) has unveiled a new look for its various country and regional economic reports covering the Middle East, Eastern Europe, North and South Africa and Asia. Four Egyptian newspaper editors have been sentenced to a year in jail and fined $3,800 each for allegedly slandering President Hosni Mubarak, his son and other ruling officials, reported Gulf News. The editors in question are: Ebrahim Eisa of Al Dustour, Adel Hamouda of Al Fajer, Wael Al Ibrashi of Sout Al Umma and Abdul Halim Qandil formerly of Al Karama. The men are free on bail and will appeal.

The advertising industry has nothing to fear from the emergence of digital media, said IAA Chair Joseph Ghossoub at the opening of the 1st Worldwide Advertising Forum in Moscow. Steve Martin, Head of Corporate Communications and Marketing of the QFC Authority, said the first campaign told the audience that Qatar was 'ready for business,' while the new campaign emphasizes that Qatar is 'doing business.'
