Al Jazeera launches new portal
- Al Jazeera has launched the region's first Arabic-language edited citizens' journalism portal, reported The National. Called Sharek, the Arabic word for 'participation', the online portal gives readers and viewers an opportunity to submit writings, photographs and videos for publication on the channel's websites and broadcast on the satellite network.

Digital measuring tool launched in ME
- Australian digital audience measurement company, Effective Measure, has partnered with market research company Real Opinions to provide an audience measurement tool for the Middle East. Real Opinions, a research agency based in Dubai, plans to launch the solution in the region in December, following global trials that generated positive feedback from industry experts, according to a press statement. The technology allows advertisers and publishers to define and measure total audience numbers accurately and without duplication and track specific traffic data points for particular sites over any specified time period. The Effective Measure solution also contains advanced reporting features and reports can be generated on market and category specific search engine keywords and phrases to allow publishers and advertisers to understand visitor intentions.

Iraq court orders photographer's release
- An Iraqui court has ordered US forces in the capital to release a Reuters photographer who has been held since September. In August, the US military freed a cameraman working for Reuters after holding him for three weeks without charge.

Dubai film festival Chairman sued
- The Chairman and managing director of the Dubai International Film Festival are to be sued in a UK court on charges of libel. The charges are being brought by former CEO Neil Stephenson, who alleges that the defendants made 'untrue and damaging claims' against him.

Student media awards presented
- The Ibda'a Media Student Awards have presented their seventh set of annual prizes, in Dubai's Media City. The Ibda'a Awards received over 2,200 entries from 25 countries including new entrants representing Brazil, Poland, Sri Lanka and Sudan.

Al Jazeera wins Foreign Press award
- News agency Al Jazeera English has received a Foreign Press Award from the London-based Foreign Press Association. Jonah Hull won the Story of the Year award for 'The War in Georgia' in which he documented the aftermath of the Russian bombing of Gori.

Advertising spend cools in UAE
- Media companies in the UAE are reporting up to a 35% drop in advertising in recent weeks, reported The National. Print and outdoor advertising have been among the hardest hit as the two sectors depend most heavily on revenue from the property market. More than half of the top 10 newspaper advertisers so far this year have been property companies, according to the Pan Arab Research Center. Mohie Patel, vice president of advertising at Khaleej Times, said the paper has seen a 35% drop in advertising, with the hardest hit segments being property, banking, and luxury goods.

Financial crisis to impact smaller publishing firms
- Chairman of the DCCI Printing and Publishing Group Ahmad Bin Al Shaikh said the regional media sector can expect job losses and the closing of smaller print and publishing outfits as it begins to feel the pinch of the worldwide financial meltdown in the next few months, reported Gulf News. He described the coming repercussions of the crisis as a 'clean-up', in which the sector purges itself of 'non-professional', smaller printing and publishing companies.
