  • ME nations tighten media controls

  • Autocratic governments in the Middle East combined periodic crackdowns with cosmetic media reforms last year to maintain their control over the press, an international media watchdog said, reported AP. In its annual survey on world press freedom, the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists said reporters have been sentenced to prison for critical writing, despite promises of reform by Middle East regimes. 'Arab governments have had success in keeping independent journalists at heel by stunting media development or by chipping away at press gains through periodic crackdowns,' said the report released in Cairo.

  • Dubai is preferred exhibition destination

  • Dubai is the foremost exhibition destination in the Middle East and Africa, spearheading a regional sector with annual revenues of Dhs12bn (3.3bn), according to data gathered at the inaugural Middle East edition of the International CEO Forum. Research presented at the ICF suggests that enlightened leadership, an enabling business environment and ongoing investment in support infrastructure are three of the major factors that have helped to position Dubai at the forefront of the global events and exhibitions industry.

  • Egypt detains AFP journalist

  • Egyptian security forces briefly detained an AFP journalist and photographer in Rafah on the border with the Gaza Strip, reported AFP. Plainclothes police officers erased the photographer's memory cards, saying journalists were no longer allowed to photograph the border, which was being closed again after it was blown open by Gaza-based militants 11 days ago. The officers refused to give their names and confiscated the journalists' identity cards before taking them to the local security office in Rafah for questioning. The journalists were released after two-and-a-half hours and were forbidden from working in Rafah.

  • Bahrain hosts film festival

  • Bahrain is to host the first international human rights film festival in the region in May, reported Gulf Daily News. It is organized by Bahrain Society for Public Freedom and Democracy Support and financed by the Social Development Ministry. It will be held from May 1 to 4. The films will be screened by Bahrain Cinema Company and Dana Cinema.

  • Lebanese singer Elissa not banned

  • Muneer Al Waseemi, head of the Egyptian Musician Union, has denied rumors that he has banned Lebanese singer Elissa from entering Egypt and performing in it. Muneer stressed that the news is merely a rumor and that he has never received any complaints against the singer to take such actions. Muneer added that such a decision cannot be taken unless he receives an official complaint against someone and an investigation is done, especially since he insists on carrying out his responsibilities according to regulations.

  • Freedom of press in Kuwait

  • Kuwait's Information Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah described his country's press as having 'a high ceiling of freedom' that was governed by the Press and Publications Law in order to achieve social maturity and development, reported Arab Times. The minister explained that there were no 'red lines' for the press as long as the Press and Publications Law was adhered to, 'thus guaranteeing justice and protecting the society.' Moreover, he expressed Kuwait's pride with the publication of new political dailies, which he said were expected to exceed 12 by the end of this year, describing this as 'a healthy phenomenon.'

  • US journalist calls Awqaf minister in Oman

  • Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Salmi, minister of Awqaf and religious affairs, received at his office yesterday Professor Robert Cablin, US journalist, thinker and writer, who is currently visting Oman, reported Oman Times. In a statement to reporters, Professor Cablin visiting the Sultanate for the first time, said that he is preparing a book on the countries overlooking the Indian Ocean including Oman. He will visit a number of tourist and archeological sites and museums in the Sultanate in addition to meeting a number of officials, he added. He has written more than 14 books on travel and tourism, especially on Arab countries in the Middle East.

  • Al Jazeera Children’s Channel has signed the membership agreement to the Arab States Broadcast Union (ASBU). ASBU is a professional non-profit organization, and one of the oldest arab joint action institutions pertaining to the League of Arab States system.
