Organisers of the Dubai Lynx are tightening the rules for next year's event, following the scandal of ghost and copy cat ads that blighted this year's competition and which ultimately led to FP7 Doha being stripped of its Agency of the Year title. Both the UAE IAA and Lynx organisers, Cannes Lions, have approved the changes, which include asking the client to confirm the ad's suitability for entry.

Mohammad Yousuf, President of the UAE Journalists' Association, told Emirates Business that bloggers and virtual journalists have the right to be protected by the assocation, provided they abide by the ethics code. 'We believe that online media has a much bigger role, and our mission is to invite bloggers and online reporters to adopt professional standards,' he said.

Reel Cinemas, the UAE's largest cinema complex featuring 22 screens and a seating capacity of 2,800, will soon be opened in the Dubai Mall. The Cineplex is developed by Reel Entertainment, a joint venture of Emaar Malls Group and Singapore-based Cathay Organisation Holdings, and is spread over an area of 110,000 sqft with direct access from the car park on both levels. Several service features will be introduced including online ticket booking facilities, automated kiosks and box-office counters.

The first edition of Kuwait's Makan weekly newspaper specializing in local economic affairs was published on Sunday. The new publication will cover real estate, investment, tourism, technology, communications, transports and food.
Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways has signed a three-year deal to be the official shirt sponsor and partner of Premier League side, Manchester City. The Etihad Airways brand logo will appear on Manchester City shirts from the summer.

Avantgarde, one of Germany's largest communications companies, will open an office in Abu Dhabi's TwoFour54 media zone this summer. It will be its second office in the Middle East, joining its Dubai office. Avantgarde's clients includes Ford, Philip Morris, Nokia as well as Abu Dhabi's Masdar project, Sorouh and TwoFour54 itself.

Network Television Network (NTN), a cable TV venture from India, will launch a 24-hour Malayalam cable television channel in the UAE through e-vision's basic subscription package. The service will launch next week. X-Vision, an India-focused English language news channel that a group of Indian investors are planning to launch in the UAE using Du Cable TV network, is also scheduled for launch.

Abu Dhabi's Department of Transport is inviting UAE-based agencies to bid for communications services required by the organisation. The winning agencies will be granted renewable annual contracts to handle various communications requirements of the department related to awareness building, education and public service announcement. The deadline for submitting the tenders is June 7.

Rotana has launched a marketing drive for the rebranding of its Khaleejiah channel, MediaWeek has reported. The drive includes four magazines, 10 newspapers and 27 outdoor LED screens in Saudi Arabia. The channel is targetting a more general family audience rather than focusing on culture.
US-based Lost History Media Ventures, a new global film and media company, is seeking investors and media partners for the firm's film and television projects about Middle Eastern and Muslim inventors, artists and visionary leaders. Michael Hamilton Morgan, head of LHMV, will visit the Gulf region 18-31 May, to meet potential investors and partners.
Intel Capital, the investment arm of the CPU maker, is to invest in digital content companies Jeeran and ShooFeeTV in Jordan. Its first investments in Jordan, the funding will be used to help both companies continue their regional growth and development plans, as well as extend their product offerings. Gordon Graylish, vice president Intel Europe Middle East and Africa, said the investment was 'in line with our strategy to continue supporting local entrepreneurship and encouraging local content creation in the Middle East'. Intel Capital's Middle East and Turkey Fund is worth $50m.

Qatar University is to hold a film festival from June 15 to June 17. The QU VidoetryFest 2009 Film Contest and Festival is being organised by the university's Foundation Programme and will feature five minute documentaries on the theme of 'Who are we when East meets West?'. Mobiles, handycams or webcams can be used as mediums and entries are open to all.
A consortium of 12 African pay TV operators led by Nigerian satellite service provider HiTV, has revealed a bid to secure North African coverage of English Premier League TV broadcast rights, currently held by Dubai-based pay TV operator Showtime. Showtime's current $120m-plus deal with the English FA, which expires at the end of the 2009/2010 EPL season, includes rights to broadcast matches in the Mena region.
