Intel invests in Jeeran and ShooFeeTV

Intel Capital, the investment arm of the CPU maker, is to invest in digital content companies Jeeran and ShooFeeTV in Jordan. Its first investments in Jordan, the funding will be used to help both companies continue their regional growth and development plans, as well as extend their product offerings. Gordon Graylish, vice president Intel Europe Middle East and Africa, said the investment was 'in line with our strategy to continue supporting local entrepreneurship and encouraging local content creation in the Middle East'. Intel Capital's Middle East and Turkey Fund is worth $50m.

Zeenah launches services in Oman

Oman-based communications group Zeenah has launched its services in Oman, introducing individual advertising, events, media and public relations companies in the sultanate. Zeenah is launching Zeenah Events, Zeenah Media and Zeenah PR and will continue to operate as TBWA\Zeenah. Zeenah is part of the Zubair Corporation.

Qatar University to hold film festival

Qatar University is to hold a film festival from June 15 to June 17. The QU VidoetryFest 2009 Film Contest and Festival is being organised by the university's Foundation Programme and will feature five minute documentaries on the theme of 'Who are we when East meets West?'. Mobiles, handycams or webcams can be used as mediums and entries are open to all.

African consortium eyes EPL TV rights

A consortium of 12 African pay TV operators led by Nigerian satellite service provider HiTV, has revealed a bid to secure North African coverage of English Premier League TV broadcast rights, currently held by Dubai-based pay TV operator Showtime. Showtime's current $120m-plus deal with the English FA, which expires at the end of the 2009/2010 EPL season, includes rights to broadcast matches in the Mena region.

Thomson Reuters reports profit rise in Q1

Financial information provider Thomson Reuters has reported its underlying operating profit climbed to $588m in the three months to March 31, compared with $576m for the same period one year ago. Net profit surged 17.5% to $228m, while revenues eased 3% to $3.1bn, the company added in its results statement.

Showtime Arabia inks deal with MGM

Showtime Arabia has signed a five-year deal with MGM Worldwide Television, a division of Metro-Goldwyn Mayer Studios, that will bring MGM's movies exclusively to Showtime customers throughout the Middle East. The agreement marks MGM's first Video On Demand (VOD) offer in the region. Showtime will kick off the partnership in June, premiering two of the latest Bond films in the 007 franchise.

Arabic titles go for BPA audit

Arabic titles - Layalina, a popular society magazine and Marie Claire (Arabic), a licensed publication focusing on the Arabic speaking women's market, both published by Dubai-based United Group International has committed for auding by BPA Worldwide. BPA will audit both titles in the key markets of UAE and Kuwait as well as in Bahrain for Layalina.

Qatar launches 'e-guide'

Qatar has launched an e-guide and directory aimed at promoting the country locally and globally. The e-guide 'See Qatar' aims to attract tourists and investors toward tourism, commerce, education, health, sport, culture, exhibitions and conferences. The project, implemented by Sedeer Advertising Services, is sponsored by the Supreme Education Council and the Ministry of Business and Trade.

France 24 increases Arabic coverage

French news broadcaster France 24 has increased its coverage in Arabic from four to 10 hours per day. The group's Arabic channel has 36 journalists and the programming will feature a mixture of news bulletins, press reviews and topical discussion programmes.

Google revises Trademark deal

Google has announced that its trademark complaint investigations will no longer result in Google monitoring or restricting keywords for ads served to users in the Mena region. This means that companies will now be able to use trademarked terms as keywords and brings Mena into line with the US, Canada, UK and Ireland

Beirut Media City planned

Kuv Capital, a growth consultant and early-stage investment firm based in Beirut, has begun holding meetings to gather support for the proposed Beirut Media City, where software developers and others in the creative sector may be based. The company is prepared to invest $1m with the hopes of attracting between $10m and $20m to launch the project, with September as the deadline to decide whether Beirut Media City is feasible.

BBC Arabic signs MSN deal

BBC Arabic has signed a deal with MSN Arabia to expand the presence of the British corporation's Arabic service across the Arab region. It said it wants to build on BBC Arabic's 'well-established, direct online audience through partnerships with highly regarded portals in the region'.

Saudi journalists sue online paper

Saudi-based e-newspaper, Kul Al-Watan (All of the Homeland) was charged with defamation filed by thirteen Saudi women journalist, Arab News has reported. The journalists have filed complaints against the paper due to a report it has published, entitled 'Saudi Women in Red Nights', alleged to have written about prostitution, alcohol and drugs becoming prevalent in Saudi society, and 'that women journalists rely on illicit relationships with newspaper bosses to get support and fame'. The online newspaper is charged for 'defaming and distorting the image of the Saudi media.'
