Thomson Reuters inks ITWorx deal

Thomson Reuters has teamed up with software professional services group ITWorx,on a deal to create an online news service for financial market news. The service will provide online access to business intelligence reports, market-moving developments, company fundamentals, consensus estimates, market data, real-time news and analytics.

Top 10 Mideast TV players get 70% of ads

Mazen Hayek, Director of Marketing, PR and Commercial of MBC Group, told Emirates Business that the top 50 TV channels in the Middle East, out of more than 450 channels overall, get the majority of advertising (up to 90%) while the top 10 get more than 70% of the advertising revenue. Hayek said that the remaining 400 odd channels are struggling to get the remaining 5% of the audience share and advertising revenue.

Stratus inks deal with Dubai Pro Sports

Stratus Media Group has signed a deal with Dubai Pro Sports & Entertainment, a live entertainment company headquartered in Dubai. Terms were not disclosed. The partnership agreement with the US firm will entitle Dubai Pro Sports & Entertainment to become an operator, marketer and promoter of Stratus Media Group properties within the UAE and surrounding countries. The properties will include concerts and music festivals, auto racing, talent management and VIP affiliate marketing programmes.

JWT wins Egyptian tourism account

The Cairo office of JWT - in partnership with Mindshare and RMG - has won the global creative and media duties on the Egyptian Tourism Authority's advertising account, Campaign Middle East has reported. The brief is worth an estimated $50m for the winning agencies, who competed on a six-way pitch that included TBWA and DDB.

Abu Dhabi Media to launch Arabic pop station

The Abu Dhabi Media Company will launch an Arabic pop radio station in May, aimed at the UAE's Arabic-speaking youngsters, Campaign Middle East has reported. The group is also looking at launching a radio station based on The National newspaper, following the airing of a television spin off earlier this year.

Syrian TV to open news centre

Syrian Television is to open a state-of-the-art news centre studio that was built on a grant from Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid and with technical assistance from Dubai Media Incorporated (DMI). DMI supervised the equipping of the studio as well as the training of technicians and journalists at the news centre.

Arab Media Forum focus on TV

Television channels will get more coverage during the workshops to be held at eh Arab Media Forum, Dubai Press Club has revealed. The three workshops will focus on the growth of private TV channels in Egypt; the proliferation of fatwa programs; and the emergence of popular heritage channels in the Arab world.

Jordan thinks on to the box

The Jordan Tourism Board has signed an agreement with DHL Express to place a sticker promoting modern Wonder of the World Petra on all packages the courier sends from Jordan to other parts of the world. The one year advertising agreement will also see DHL's logo placed on the Tourism Board's calendar of events website.

UAE 'supports press freedom'

Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair, the spokesman for the UAE Federal National Council, has stressed the importance of promoting freedom of the press, in response to the Human Rights Watch report on the media law. 'The [draft media] law is the result of lengthy discussions among members of the council's education, youth, media and culture committees and those concerned from the private and public sectors, representatives of civil society organisations - including the Journalists' Association - as well as academics specialising in mass communications media and representatives of the local press,' Al Ghurair said.

Advertising spend in UAE falls 14%

UAE advertising spending in the first quarter of this year dropped 14% compared with the same quarter last year, according to the Pan Arab Research Center. The drop was led by advertising in the property and financial services markets, which fell 60% and 46% respectively compared with last year.

Dubai magazine publisher to close

Dubai-based DIT Group, which publishes Forbes Arabia and PC Magazine, has announced that it plans to cease operations in the near future. The company, which has about 40 employees, said the main factor behind the decision is the corporate direction of DIT's Saudi Arabian parent company, Dabbagh Group, which wants to get out the publishing business, reported Communicate magazine.

UAE cracks down on illegal DishTV sellers

The UAE Ministry of Economy said it recently conducted raids against unauthorized DishTV dealers in the UAE, issuing directives to concerned authorities to clamp down on those selling these boxes, which are illegally imported from India and sold throughout the Gulf. Threatening stringent legal action against violators, the Ministry said that piracy harms the competitiveness of the UAE, which ultimately reflects negatively on the national economy.

National to extend digital offering

Abu Dhabi's broadsheet daily the National plans to extend its reach through online media, according to editor Martin Newland. Speaking to Media Week, he said: 'There's news, foreign correspondents, citizen journalism, sport and more [TV programme] Inside the National to come.' The National sells 5,000 copies a day, with 10,000 subscriptions and 45,000 copies given away free of charge.

No plans for more radio stations, says ARN

Mahmoud Al Rasheed, General Manager of Arabian Radio Network in the UAE, has said the organisation has no immediate plans to launch any more stations. It has eight stations broadcasting in the country across several languages, but told Media Week the strategy is to concentrate on quality over new launches. 'We do not have immediate plans to launch another station ...however, radio stations are created when there is a clear market need,' he said.

Global ad spend to fall 6.9% in 2009, says agency

Advertising spending worldwide will fall 6.9% this year to $453bn, according to ZenithOptimedia, an arm of French advertising group Publicis. In lowering a previous forecast, the media agency forecasts that the rate of decline will slow towards the end of the year and rebound in 2010. In December, ZenithOptimedia had predicted that the market would be flat in 2009. Spending on Internet advertising is predicted to rise 8.6% this year, the only medium that is projected to see higher expenditure on ads.
