Abu Dhabi buys London events venue
- State-owned Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (Adnec) has acquired Britain's top events venue ExCel London in a Dhs2.3bn ($627m) deal as part of the emirate's efforts to create a global network of exhibition centres, reported Bloomberg. ExCeL occupies a prime site in London's Docklands, and has hosted over 1,500 events and received four million visitors since 2000.

Nakheel to bring Cirque du Soleil to Palm
- Dubai-based developer Nakheel has announced that Palm Jumeirah will host Cirque du Soleil’s world famous touring show ‘Alegria’ in Spring 2009 as a prelude to the permanent show which is due to open on the island in Summer 2011. In May 2007, the two organizations signed a 15-year deal to jointly design and build a 1,800-seat theatre that will be home to the first ever Cirque resident show to be staged outside of the USA and Japan. The permanent show will be housed in Palm Mall on the Palm Jumeirah, Nakheel announced at the Arabian Travel Market 2008. The announcement, made at Arabian Travel Market 2008, comes one year after Nakheel and Cirque du Soleil announced a major partnership to develop a permanent show on Palm Jumeirah.

ART to set up in Dubai Studio City
- Saudi-based Arab Radio and Television network (ART) has signed a deal with Dubai Studio City to set up offices and studios in the emirate. ART, a subsidiary of Arab Media Corporation, specializes in family entertainment, including movies, music and sport, exclusively in Arabic. The new space will cover 19,000 square feet.

E-Vision plans 300 channels
- E-Vision, the cable TV arm of Etisalat, said it plans to boost its content base to 300 channels in the UAE by adding a wide array of movies, sports, news and kids channels. The company is in talks with channels and content providers across the globe to expand its current lineup of 220 TV channels and 15 premium packages.

Bahrain approves press law
- Bahrain's cabinet has approved a draft law guaranteeing press freedoms. Under the legislation the exercise of freedom of opinion and criticism will no longer be punishable, within the contexts governing the practices. The law also abrogates jail terms and police custody for journalists.

Court overturns newspaper closure
- A Yemeni court has overturned a decision by the Minister of Information to cancel an independent newspaper's licence, Gulf News has reported. The court also fined the Ministry $250 for interfering with judicial powers. The Ministry is set to appeal the ruling.

Jordan King issues press protection letter
- King Abdullah of Jordan has written a letter to Prime Minister Nader Dahabi calling on the executive branch to remove all obstacles faced by the press, the Jordan Times has reported. Analysts expect the government to take immediate measures to follow the spirit of the letter, which was issued on World Press Freedom Day.

UAE's push on press freedom
- As UN celebrates World Press Freedom Day today, the UAE claims it is one of the leading countries in the region in press freedom and in pushing for human rights, according to a UAE university professor, cited Gulf News. The UAE has passed a decree that journalists should not be jailed for their work. While ownership and government's licencing approval for publications still hang as one issue posed against level of freedom, journalists in the UAE claim press freedom is being exercised in the country.
