  • Al Jazeera Children's Channel has signed the membership agreement to the Arab States Broadcast Union (ASBU). ASBU is a professional non-profit organization, and one of the oldest arab joint action institutions pertaining to the League of Arab States system.

  • 6 authors shortlisted for 'Arabic Booker' prize

  • Six authors have been shortlisted for The International Prize for Arabic Fiction, which was launched in April 2007 and is the first of its kind, reported Gulf News. The winner of the 'Arabic Booker' prize, which will be announced at a gala dinner in Abu Dhabi on March 10, will take home $50,000.

  • Al-Jazeera journalist arrested in Egypt

  • An Al-Jazeera journalist already appealing one jail sentence was arrested again while filming a documentary, allegedly without a proper license, her lawyer and police said, reported AP. Egyptian Howaida Taha, 44, a documentary producer for the pan-Arab TV news channel, was filming in a low-income neighborhood in Cairo when police detained her in the morning. A police official, speaking on customary condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media, confirmed the arrest and said four other people also were detained, including three crew members and an Egyptian human rights activist.

  • Egyptian 'lesbian' film comes under fire

  • Heena Maysra, an Egyptian film directed by Khalid Yousuf, has come under fire for breaking taboos and 'tarnishing' Egypt's repuation, reported Gulf News. The film revolves around the living conditions for the inhabitants of a shantytown, echoing the daily grind of an estimated 15 million people living under similar circumstances in different parts of this country of 76 million. The film has been particularly panned for a scene involving lesbianism, a taboo-breaker in Egyptian cinema.

  • Gulf Chapter elects new board

  • The Gulf Chapter of the International Public Relations Association has elected a new board of directors for 2008-2009. Announcing the results, Dr. Thuraya Al Arrayed, Chairperson of the Nominations Committee, congratulated members on the smooth flow of the election process and announced the names of the new board members as follows: IPRA GC President, Faisal Al Zahrani; Executive Vice President, Sultan Al Bazie; Vice President Qatar were among the names elected.

  • Qatar museum to showcase Islamic art

  • Qatar will host some of the world's most important art collections starting November 22, when the Museum of Islamic Arts opens its doors, reported Gulf News. The Qatar Museum Authority in partnership with the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of New York, the Louvre, the Royal Collection of Morocco, Egypt's Museum of Islamic Art, and the Cartier Collection of France will bring to Doha world-class exhibitions over a five-year programme. The museum, whose estimated cost is $800m, is located on an artificial island about 60m off Doha and will be accessible by a pedestrian bridge.

  • Qatar to issue press freedom award

  • The Samir Kassir Award for Freedom of the Press is now open for applications from Qatari nationals, reported Gulf Times. Candidates have until March 30 to apply for the award, which will be presented by a delegation of the European Commission to Lebanon, in association with the Samir Kassir Foundation, at a ceremony in Beirut on June 2. The award celebrates the 'power of the written word' and 'freedom of expression,' and is dedicated to the development of journalism in the Middle East.

  • UAE lacks freedom of press - says editor

  • The UAE does not enjoy full freedom of the press, according to Abdul Hamid Ahmad, Editor in Chief of Gulf News. He said the fact that you need a licence to publish a newspaper means 'there is no freedom and media is being controlled by the government'. Journalists should be given access to information and should not be taken to penal courts, he added.
