IHT signs Dubai deal
- The International Herald Tribune has announced plans to start printing its newspaper in Dubai and distribute the daily each morning throughout the UAE beginning May 5. Local daily Khaleej Times has signed a deal with the IHT to print and distribute the Europe, Middle East and Africa edition of the IHT in the region. The agreement also paves the way for joint marketing initiatives and co-branding of pages between the two newspapers, the Khaleej Times said.

Kuwait is tops for press freedom
- Kuwait leads the way in freedom of the press in the Arab world, according to a survey of independent media in 195 countries and territories, reported Kuwait Times. Countries were scored on a 100-point scale, with 100 representing total government control over mass media, and zero indicating perfect freedom. Kuwait scored 54 points, Lebanon 55 points, and Egypt 59 points. The report said 15 countries in the Middle East and Africa, or about 76% of the population in the region, were considered not free.

Fox Movies to air in Middle East
- The first free-to-air branded Hollywood movie channel is to be launched in the region by a partnership between Fox International Channels and Rotana Media Services, reported Gulf News. Fox Movies will air starting Thursday, with content targeted at the Arab population. Fillers between movies will be tailored to the local niche market and movies will have Arabic subtitles.

FT launches Middle East edition
- The Financial Times on Tuesday is launching a Middle East regional edition based in the UAE. The regional edition will feature a new masthead and a dedicated Middle East page every Tuesday and Thursday. Roula Khalaf, the Middle East editor at the FT, is leading the enhanced coverage from London, with regional editorial and commercial teams based in Abu Dhabi.

Saudi Media Institute opens
- The Prince Ahmed bin Salman Applied Media Institute has been inaugurated in Riyadh. The institue is the first of its kind in the kingdom and will provide training programmes in print, audio and visual media.

Press photo expo to open
- The World Press Photo of the Year entries will be exhibited in Manama from May 1. The 200 photos, representing visual reports of the major events of 2007, were culled from 80,500 original submissions. The photos will be on display for three weeks.

Saudi blogger released
- A Saudi man detained for over four months for expressing pro-reform opinions on his blog has been released, according to a Gulf News report. Earlier this month authorities blocked access to his website where he had been running a campaign to free 10 men, whose supporters claim they are being held for pro-democracy activities.

- Financial services company Dubai Group has entered into a strategic partnership with Dubai Press Club to foster the growth of financial reporting. The company will sponsor and support the Press Club's monthly activities and training programmes.
