Foundation to translate books
- The Mohammad Bin Rashid Foundation in Dubai has signed an agreement with Saudi Arabian publishers and booksellers Al Obekan to translate and publish a collection of bestsellers with a special focus on management development titles. The programme seeks to translate 365 books a year, with 50% of the works to be translated in 2008 to be on management development and corporate excellence topics.

Bahraini journalist sues MP
- A Bahraini journalist has sued a member of parliament accusing him of insulting her and hurting her feelings during a recent press conference, reported Khaleej Times. Batool Al Sayed is the first journalist to press charges against a parliamentarian in Bahrain. The incident occurred when Batool asked Dr Ali Ahmed why his bloc was pushing for the grilling of the Municipalities and Agriculture Minister Mansoor bin Rajab while neglecting other serious corruption scandals. The MP got angry and asked her to behave and learn how to talk. According to the journalist, the MP's remarks made her feel humiliated in front of those attending the event.

Jordan media plans protests
- At least 18 Jordanian media outlets are planning to launch a campaign to protest the reprinting of a controversial cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed in Danish newspapers, reported AFP. Zakaria Sheikh, editor of Fact International weekly, said independent newspapers and websites, including Islamists ones, will run a series of articles and editorials from Wednesday against 'attempts to distort Islam's image'.

Joint venture buys Egypt media firm stake
- A joint venture of Egypt-based private equity firm Citadel Capital has acquired 61% of the Egyptian Company for Marketing and Distribution, which owns the financial daily newspaper Al Mal, reported Reuters. The publishing company's chairman and managing director, Hazem Sherif, said Al Kateb Publishing Company, of which he owns 51% and Citadel owns 49%, had acquired the stake at a price to earnings (PE) ratio of 8.

Al Jazeera wins Uefa Cup rights
- Al Jazeera Sports has won exclusive broadcast rights to UEFA Champions League matches across the Middle East and North Africa for four years, reported The Peninsula. The UEFA said the deal includes rights to the quarter, semi and final UEFA Cup matches, the UEFA Super Cup, and Internet and mobile rights. The Doha-based channel beat off stiff competition from ART, Orbit, Showtime and Abu Dhabi to secure the deal.It includes rights to the quarter, semi and final UEFA Cup matches, the UEFA Super Cup and internet and mobile rights.

Blink sets up at Dubai Studio City
- Blink Studios announced its new headquarters in Dubai Studio City. A subsidiary of UAE-based Greenline Interiors, its new facility will include a state-of-the-art in-house studio to execute its individual production projects, and for use by third parties on lease. Blink Studios' range services include high definition and 35mm shooting for cinema, TV commercials and documentaries, 3D walk-through animated graphics for the corporate sector, and fully animated TV cartoon programmes.

Iran sentences journalist to death
- Iran has sentenced a journalist to death, accusing him of being a member of a terrorist group in the country's southeast, the judiciary said, reported the New York Times. Yaghoob Mirnehad who is an ethnic Baluchi, was a journalist in southeastern Iran for Mardomsalari, a newspaper based in Tehran. He was arrested with his brother and four others in May. The other five men were released within three months, while Mirnehad was kept in prison. The number of executions in Iran has risen steeply in the past year. Iranian news agencies reported that 12 people were hanged this week bringing the total number of executions to 48 in 2008.
