Iran protests cartoon
- Iran has summoned Denmark's envoy to protest the reprinting of a caricature of the prophet Muhammad that triggered riots and the torching of Danish embassies two years ago, reported Bloomberg. Denmark's three biggest newspapers on Wednesday printed Kurt Westergaard's cartoon of Muhammad wearing a bomb in his turban, first published in 2005, to show their support for the cartoonist a day after police foiled a murder plot against him. Iran's Foreign Ministry told the ambassador 'of Iran's serious concern about the republication of an insulting caricature about Prophet Muhammad'.

New online course for Mideast journalists
- The International Center for Journalists will be offering a new online course for Arabic-speaking journalists titled 'How to Create a News Web Site'. Veteran journalist Daoud Kuttab will lead the six-week program, which will gather together Arab journalists from across the region in a virtual classroom. The course, conducted in Arabic, begins April 1. It is designed to provide practical, hands-on lessons on a variety of topics related to news Web site development, strategy and management. Journalists must apply by March 3.

Egypt drops journalist jail term
- An Al Jazeera journalist will not have to serve a six-month jail sentence in Egypt after an appeals court overturned a ruling that she tarnished the country's reputation for running a report on police torture, reported several news agencies. However, Howaida Taha will still have to pay a fine as the court upheld charges that she fabricated videotapes used in a documentary. Ahmed Helmi, Taha's lawyer, said he planned to appeal against the ruling. The fine is LE20,000 ($3,600).

Abu Dhabi exhibitions up 185%
- Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Company (Adnec) has reported a 185% increase in the number of major exhibitions staged at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. The company announced that it will participate in three international events in February - London's Confex 2008, Melbourne's AIME and China's UFI Open Seminar in Asia - to celebrate its first anniversary. Since its opening in February 2007, Adnec has staged more than 40 major events.

New low for media freedom in Egypt, Yemen
- The most recent freedom of opinion and expression report released by the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (HRInfo), finds that 2007 was the worst year for Egyptian media since Egyptian independence in 1952. The report examines the authorities' negligence of freedom of press laws, as well as the legislation used to incarcerate journalists, bloggers, and, for the first time, artists.

IMPZ supports effectiveness in marketing awards
- The International Media Production Zone (IMPZ), a member of TECOM Investments, sponsored the GMR Effectiveness in Marketing Awards 2008 (GEMAS 2008), which were presented on 7 February in Dubai. Representatives from TECOM Investments media clusters - Dubai Media City, International Media Production Zone and Dubai Studio City - attended the event that highlighted best practices and recognized excellence in the industry.

Top Lebanese TV stations
- In a survey conducted by the Arab Advisors Group, 37.6% and 37.1% of respondents named LBC and Future TV, respectively, as one of five stations Lebanese watched most, while news is the most popular program type among all age groups. The survey also revealed terrestrial TV remains top in Lebanon while satellite TV gains some following.

1200 satellite channels for Mideast by 2015
- Salah Hamza, CEO of Cairo-based satellite operator Nilesat, said the Middle East should have 1200 satellite channels by 2015, reported the UK's Rapid TV News. Hamza said he expects the total channel count to grow from today's near-900 channels to nearer 1200 by 2015.
