Qatar will host some of the world's most important art collections starting November 22, when the Museum of Islamic Arts opens its doors, reported Gulf News. The Qatar Museum Authority in partnership with the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of New York, the Louvre, the Royal Collection of Morocco, Egypt's Museum of Islamic Art, and the Cartier Collection of France will bring to Doha world-class exhibitions over a five-year programme. The museum, whose estimated cost is $800m, is located on an artificial island about 60m off Doha and will be accessible by a pedestrian bridge.
The Samir Kassir Award for Freedom of the Press is now open for applications from Qatari nationals, reported Gulf Times. Candidates have until March 30 to apply for the award, which will be presented by a delegation of the European Commission to Lebanon, in association with the Samir Kassir Foundation, at a ceremony in Beirut on June 2. The award celebrates the 'power of the written word' and 'freedom of expression,' and is dedicated to the development of journalism in the Middle East.
The UAE does not enjoy full freedom of the press, according to Abdul Hamid Ahmad, Editor in Chief of Gulf News. He said the fact that you need a licence to publish a newspaper means 'there is no freedom and media is being controlled by the government'. Journalists should be given access to information and should not be taken to penal courts, he added.

Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism, an Amman-based NGO, is offering young journalists in the region a unique opportunity to explore the world of investigative journalism, reported the Jordan Times. The organization has invited 25 journalists from Syria, Lebanon and Jordan to take part in regular workshops on investigative methods, legal issues that reporters need to be aware of to avoid ramifications of unearthing sensitive information and reporting on them.
Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, the world's largest sovereign wealth fund, has selected US public relations firm Burson Marsteller to handle its communications, reported the UK's Financial Times. The firm will help Adia identify and communicate with stakeholders. The fund has until now declined to comment on deals or engage with the public.

An Iranian-French journalism student who had been prevented from leaving Iran for nearly a year was en route to Paris over the weekend, reported AFP. Mehrnoushe Solouki, a 38-year-old graduate student from Montreal, Canada, was arrested in February in Iran while working on a documentary film on the Iraq-Iran war. Solouki was freed in March after posting bail and had since been under house arrest in Teheran pending the outcome of an investigation. He had been arrested for interviewing relatives of members of Iran's armed opposition, the People's Mujahedeen.

Chairman of the Egyptian-Chinese Friendship Association Youssuf Waly hailed the traditional friendship between the two countries, reported Xinhua. Egypt-based Connect Ads, the online advertising unit of Internet solutions provider LINKdotNET, has reported a 140% increase in revenue in 2007. The company said that online ad spend in the Middle East was $18.7m in 2006, and is expected to grow continually at an annual rate of 50% to reach $142m by year 2011.
Dubai-based Motivate Publishing announced the signing of a joint venture with On Product Publishing International (OPP), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Modern Media Concepts, the global company behind the world's first magazine on a bottle. The joint venture, called Motivate OPP Middle East will be headed by Thomas Kelly and will operate from Dubai and already has a number of projects in the pipeline for 2008.

Al Jazeera English announces a new deal with one of Asia's leading cable operators, Hong Kong Cable for the channel to broadcast in Hong Kong. The agreement is yet another step forward for Al Jazeera English's rapid distribution growth - the channel now reaches over 100 million households worldwide. Al Jazeera will debut on Hong Kong Cable on January 16 this year.
Editors in Chief of local newspapers in Dubai are setting up a committee to follow up the implementation of the journalist code of ethics, reported Gulf News. The committee, which will be chaired by Saeed Al Badi, Board member of the UAE Journalists Association, will monitor the newspapers to ensure the implementation of the code of ethics, without having censorship authority.

The Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre had its biggest year ever in 2007, welcoming more than one million visitors - an increase of 25% - across exhibitions, events, conferences and other shows. In total, the venue hosted 97 exhibitions and nine confexes (conferences with significant exhibition components).
