New TV studios planned for Saudi
- The Saudi Research and Publishing Company, the print media wing of the Saudi Research Marketing Group, is planning a network of TV studios. The first phase of the project will be implemented by Unitecnic, MediaPro Group's engineering department, which has been contracted for the work. Once the facilities are ready, SRPC will offer broadcast services to local and international broadcasters.

British journalist freed in Iraq
- British journalist Richar Butler, who was kidapped in Iraq's southern city of Basra two months ago, has been freed on Monday, reported AFP. Butler, from the US television network CBS News, was found during an Iraqi military sweep in the Jibiliya area, a Shiite militia stronghold.

Egypt frees detained journalists
- Egypt has releases nine photojournalists and a cameraman who were arrested while covering violent protests at a textile factory against low wages and rising food costs. All were Egyptian nationals and were released after a few hours in custody.

Don't copy Western TV, says minister
- Bahrain's Ministry of Information is developing plans to develop TV in the country, calling for Arab channels to integrate to push forward 'Arab empowerment in the media'. A Bahrain Tribune report said the Ministry wants to encourage innovation and avoid mimicking Western shows. This can only be achieved, it believes, by the more advanced channels pushing such shows through and the Ministry will working with channels at an 'inventory, artistic and technical' levels.

Thomson SA wins 2 broadcasting contracts in KSA
- French professional media services group Thomson SA said it won two 'multi-million euro' contracts for broadcasting equipment and services from the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Culture and Information. In a statement, Thomson said one contract is to extend the network of digital television transmitters across the country and the other is to create a digital archive of film, radio and television for the state broadcaster.

Koran sells for record $4.92m
- An anonymous investor paid a record 2.5 million pounds ($4.92m) for a 7th-century leaf from a Koran at a Christie's auciton of Islamic art yesterday in London, reported Bloomberg. Christie's said the 36-centimeter vellum leaf was one of the earliest fragments of the Koran produced. The price paid by the collector, more than 20 times the lower estimate, was the highest for an Islamic manuscript at auction.

BBC Arabic television now on E-Vision in UAE
- BBC Arabic has extended its television availability in the UAE under a new partnership with UAE-based cable TV platform, E-Vision. Its news and information programming is now available to audiences in the Emirates via Channel 41 of E Vision. This is the first local cable agreement for BBC Arabic television.

Ad spend in UAE to hit $2bn by 2010
- Advertising spend in the UAE increased from $869m in 2005 to $1.3bn in 2007, the highest in the Middle East, according to Spencer Felix, exhibition manager for Signage, Imaging and Media (SIM 2008), which takes place at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre from November 25-27. The bulk of the money - about 64% - went to Arabic and English newspapers. Television accounted for 16% while magazines got 13%. He predicts that advertising spend in the UAE will exceed $2bn by 2010, reported Gulf News.
