  • Arab FM radio stations in boom

  • According to a study conducted by Jordan-based Arab Advisors Group, the number of frequency modulation (FM) radio stations in the 18 Arab countries has increased to 316 compared with 211 stations in February last year, cited Gulf News. Palestine, Iraq and Lebanon have the highest number of private radio stations, while Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman have allowed private radio stations only in 2003, 2004, and 2006 respectively.

  • Rawaj wins A. Lange & Söhne

  • Rawaj International has been appointed as the official public relations agency for A. Lange & Söhne to campaign for the brand in the GCC, Lebanon and Turkey beginning 1st April. A. Lange & Söhne is a German luxury watch brand, dating back as far as 1845, from the town of Glashütte near Dresden.

  • Venture doubles billings in 2007

  • Newly-established Dubai-based Venture Communications said its billings for 2007 has doubled touching Dhs30m. The company's operations began in 2005, servicing 60% media buying, 20% production, 10% PR and events, and 10% branding and creative for regional clients.

  • Dubai Lynx winners revealed

  • The winners of the 2nd Dubai Lynx Awards for advertising in the Mena region were announced yesterday. After selecting a shortlist of 513 ads from the 2023 entries submitted, the jury awarded a total of 180 Dubai Lynx trophies. The Print category was the strongest with a total of 45 winners, followed by Outdoor with 40, 28 in Direct, 24 trophies were awarded in the new Media category, 20 in TV/Cinema, there were 15 Interactive winners and 4 in Integrated as well as 4 Radio winners. The UAE won the most awards taking home 127 trophies, followed by Qatar with 18, Lebanon with 12, and Egypt with 7.

  • Egypt pulls German magazine over Islam portrayal

  • Egypt has confiscated a special edition of the German magazine Der Spiegel about Islam that the government says insults the Muslim Prophet Mohammad, reported Reuters, citing Egypt's state news agency MENA. Among the reasons cited for confiscating the magazine, whose cover bore the headline 'Allah in the West', included paragraphs quoting a 'German orientalist' as saying that Islam called for violence and terrorism, and the characterization of Islam as a Christian sect.

  • ME advertising prospects look bright

  • Despite the potential gloomy outlook for the international economy, prospects for Middle East advertising are upbeat, with the Olympics and Euro 2008 promising an ad windfall for regional media, especially print media, according to Bander Asiri, managing director of Saudi Arabia-based Al Khaleejiah Advertising and Public Relations Co. Speaking during the first Dubai International Advertising Festival, Asiri pointed out that in the last World Cup year, 2006, ad sales for the sports daily Arriyadiah saw year-on-year growth of 122% in the summer period, and the regional print advertising market in general grew 12%.

  • M&C Saatchi sets up regional base in Bahrain

  • M&C Saatchi, the advertising agency formed by brothers Maurice and Charles Saatchi, have announced that they are setting up a base in Bahrain to serve the Middle East, reported Bloomberg. M&C Saatchi has 18 offices in 13 countries around the world. Its regional clients include the Bahrain Economic Development Board.

  • Dubai offers metro naming rights

  • Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority has announced the Dubai Metro Naming Rights Project, which will give companies the opportunity to put their names to 23 stations along the Red and the Green Lines, reported Khaleej Times. Each of the stations will have a unique value, calculated according to their location, anticipated passenger numbers and other factors, said Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA. The metro's Red Line is expected to be operational by September 2009, while the Green Line is planned to start functioning in March 2010. Interested companies can get more information from the RTA website (www.rta.ae).
