UAE advertising spends $1.3bn
- The 2007 Advertising Spend Report of Pan Arab Research Centre showed that advertising spending in the UAE has reached $1.3bn in 2007 from $869m in 2005, cited Gulf News. About 64% went to Arabic and English newspapers, while top spenders are into the real estate, telecom, jewellery, airline and food industries.

Dubai Lynx gets 20% more entries
- According to organisers of 1st Dubai International Advertising Festival, which incorporates the 2nd Dubai Lynx Awards, about 2023 entries from 17 countries are set to compete for the Dubai Lynx trophies, 20% higher than last year's.

Rufus Leonard expands in Mideast
- Rufus Leonard has opened a new office in Dubai Media City to serve as hub for the Middle East including Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The branch has also won to do the branding for Lloyds TSB in Dubai.

Editor in Egypt jailed
- The editor-in-chief of Egyptian daily Al-Dustur has been jailed for six months, after he wrote rumours about President Hosni Mubarak's health. Ibrahim Eissa was charged with spreading false information that was damaging to the public interest and national stability. The maximum penalty was three years in prison. Originally due to be tried in a state security court, where there is no leave to appeal, he was eventually convicted in an ordinary court, so can appeal the sentence.

Abu Dhabi previews new newspaper
- Abu Dhabi Media Company has previewed its new national, English-language newspaper to media buying and advertising agencies before its official launch next month. The newspaper is deemed to have a team of 200 internationally and locally recruited journalists and will focus on Abu Dhabi.

DMI hands over Syria news centre
- A modern news centre from Dubai Media Incorporated (DMI) has been set up in Damascus to cover the upcoming Arab Summit, reported WAM. The new centre has been handed over to Syrian Information Minister Mohsen Bilal. The centre has 60 media rooms for TV, radio and newspaper reporters, 6 studios, 10 stationary and mobile transmission stations, including 5 rooms for radio reporters, among others.

Dutch Islam film site shut
- The website that was due to show a Dutch film dubbed anti Islam by critics has been suspended by its US hosting service. Network Solutions said it was investigating complaints that the film breached guidelines on the use of hate language. Produced by Dutch right-wing politician Geert Wilders, his film describes Islam as an 'enemy of freedom'. A number of countries have complained about the film, including Iran.

MCN Holding signs deal with Jinny Software
- Jinny Software, a provider of personalised messaging and media solutions to the mobile industry, has signed an agreement with Dubai-based communications company, MCN Holding, a full-service advertising, marketing and media groups, with numerous affiliates and subsidiaries throughout the Middle East and Africa. Under the terms of the deal, MCN will work exclusively with Jinny and its Advertising Engine when it seeks to buy mobile network advertising space on behalf of its many clients. This will apply to SMS, MMS or other emerging messaging-based advertising methods for which the Jinny solution is ideally suited.
