Pearl-Qatar signs Alshaya

The Pearl-Qatar has signed an agreement with Kuwait-based Alshaya Retail Group to develop retail operations at the development. Alshaya Group will invest in 60,000 sqft of retail space at the Porto Arabia fashion district. The Alshaya Group is the leading Middle East franchisee for premium stores and brands such as Debenhams, Mothercare, Top Shop and Starbucks.

Jumbo, huge Mall of Emirates store

Jumbo Electronics is set to open largest consumer electronics store at the Mall of the Emirates on September 26. At 100,000 sqft, the store layout has been conceptualised keeping in mind McKinsey & Company's recommendations on retailing. Jumbo's 27th store in the UAE, will house 50 major brands including Sony, Nokia, Hewlett-Packard, Apple, Acer, Casio, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson.

Dubai Pearl, another huge mall

The Dubai Pearl development opposite The Palm, Jumeriah, now includes a huge shopping mall on three levels which will be one of the biggest in the world, said officials at the Cityscape exhibition. Plans for The Pearl Dubai have been extensively revised to include more retail space which should open in late 2008.

Dubai, premium gifts centre

Premium 2005, a gifts and incentives trade show in Dubai, attracted more than 3,500 buyers from 49 countries. At the conclusion of the three-day event exhibitors said that Dubai was emerging as the regional capital of the premium products industry.

DSS, 6% more visitors

The Dubai Shopping Festival 2005 reported 3.3m visitors, representing a 6% increase over last year. Organisers say the increase in numbers was mainly due to the shopping theme being complimented by family entertainment events. Spending was up 15% to more than $1.8bn.

Reiss comes to the UAE

Reiss, the UK's high street fashion label that won the prestigious British retailer of the year award in 2003, will open its first store in the Middle East at the beginning of October. The flagship store will be located at the Mall of the Emirates in Dubai.

Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf centre

Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf has opened its regional training centre in Dubai's Al Quoz industrial area. The 2,000 sqft facility will cater to the operational and training needs of the entire Middle East region. The regional centre is also the UAE's distribution hub, with a 20-strong team ensuring supplies to the chain's nine outlets across the emirates.

$36m new Jeddah hypermarket

The Savola Group will open a new $36m hypermarket on September 27. This is the food and vegetable oil group's first hypermarket. The $36m new store will be located in the Al-Jamea area to the south of Jeddah in the Al-Jamea Plaza, reported Arab News.

$1.9bn Aqua Dunya for Dubailand

The Al Sharq Group of Saudi Arabia is to invest $1.9bn in developing the 8m sqft Aqua Dunya development as part of Dubailand. It will be completed by early 2008 and include 3,400 apartments and the world's largest cruise ship, the Desert Pearl. Mace is already appointed project management consultant.

Dubailand, $8.2bn committed

Investors have committed a total of $8.2bn to 25 projects within the Dubailand theme park development, CEO Salem bin Dasmal told Gulf News. This represents around 60% of the amount targeted at the launch of Dubailand two years ago, and officials are confident that another five projects will be announced before the end of the year.
