Dubai Sports City's Manchester United Soccer Schools has held its first training session at Al Wasl Sports Club. Over the next four months more than 500 children aged between seven and 16 will be put through a programme adapted from the Manchester United's Youth Academy.

GCC retail shopping malls generate gross revenue of $30bn a year, representing 5.5% of the region's total GDP, according to a report by Retail International cited in Gulf News. The figure represents almost 55% of all retail sales.
Planning for the Dubai Shopping Festival 2006 is on schedule with over 2,000 outlets confirmed participants in the month long event, according to organisers. Over 115 separate events will also be held, including the nightly fireworks at Al Mamzar Park, Dubai Creek and Global Village.

Britain's biggest DJ, Norman Cook, better known as Fatboy Slim, will be making his first ever Middle East appearance at the Dubai International Convention Centre on 5 January 2005, according to Gulf News. He will be supported by singer Neneh Cherry and a other performers.

The Dubai Shopping Festival roadshow stopped off in Muscat yesterday. The delegation is visiting three cities in Saudi Arabia, as well as Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain. We want all the families of the Gulf to come and participate in one of the world's biggest shopping festivals, said CEO Saeed Al Naboudah.
Canadian rock star Bryan Adams will be back in Dubai for a concert on February 2 in the Dubai Media City amphitheatre. His tour will coincide with the release of his Anthology album, and feature a full band. Talent Brokers are the local concert promoter.

This soaring price of gold is hitting local jewellery sales in Dubai which are always price sensitive. PJ Jewellery export manager Kyle Choi told Gulf News that since November sales had fallen by 40%, while Baki Jewellery reported a 10% fall in demand.

Consumer confidence in the UAE has slipped in H2 2005, according to the results of the MasterIndex commissioned by MasterCard International. The UAE scored 78.1 out of 100, down from 92.9 six months ago, which places it third in the Middle East and North Africa. Analysts say that a rise in inflation is the most likely cause for the drop.

Organisers of the Dubai International Film Festival 2005 have reported strong advanced sales for the event, with tickets for all six of the nightly gala screenings fully booked. The festival will screen 98 films, including full-length features, retrospectives and short films. It runs from 11-17 December.

A unique diamond with 99 facets to reflect the 99 holy names of Allah, called the Dubai cut, has been launched by the Dubai Metals and Commodities Centre. In a deal with Russian diamond manufacturers Kristall, 1,800 of the stones will be created per year.
