Al Ain Zoo set for renovation

Al Ain Zoo is to undergo a major renovation programme in order to transform it into a major regional wildlife attraction, reported TradeArabia. $2bn Mideast cosmetics sales

Sales of beauty care products are enjoying a boom in the Middle East, with the sector seeing annual growth of 12% and it is estimated that the total value of sales will reach $2.1bn this year. Last year, the cosmetics and personal care market in the UAE was worth around $414m in retail sales, up from $382m the previous year.

Harrington for AD event

Irish Ryder Cup winner Padraig Harrington is the latest big-name golfer to sign up for the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship later next month, reported The Peninsula. Harrington, ranked eighth in the world, joins defending champion Chris DiMarco of the US, Scotland's Colin Montgomerie, world number six Retief Goosen of South Africa and Spaniard Sergio Garcia in the event.

Hajj, $20m gem deals

The current Hajj pilgrimage is expected to see a healthy trade in precious stones as traders from all over the world bring their gems to Saudi Arabia, reported Gulf News citing the Arabic newspaper Al Sharq Al Awsat. Deals amounting to about $20m are expected, with Indian pilgrims dealing in diamonds and emeralds, Sri Lankans bringing stones such as sapphires and rubies and Russians selling amber.

Gulf Craft builds super yacht

UAE-based Gulf Craft has built what it claims is the largest yacht ever turned out in the Middle East. The 130-foot Majesty 130 has successfully completed sea trials and will soon be delivered to its Australian owner, the company said. It was built over two years at Gulf Craft's Umm Al Quwain yard.

Starbucks opens in Egypt

Starbucks has opened its first coffeehouse in Egypt through local partner Alshaya Egypt. It is located in Cairo's City Centre. Alshaya operates more than 200 Starbucks stores across the Middle East and Turkey, the company said.

Inter Milan star for Al Ittihad

Inter Milan's Portuguese midfielder Luis Figo is set to join Saudi Arabian side Al Ittihad, AP reported. The 34-year-old has reportedly signed a deal worth $8m to play for six months, an anonymous club official is quoted as saying. Figo retired from internationals after the World Cup in Germany.

Malls devour souqs

Upmarket shopping malls with convenient car parks are taking trade away from small shops and traditional souqs, according Qatar's Peninsula newspaper. It found that clothes and jewellery shops were the worst hit, with shopkeepers claiming sales were down 50% on a year ago. Traditional sweet shops fared better. A lack of proper car parking was partly blamed for the downturn.

Carrefour opens in Jordan

French supermarket chain Carrefour has opened its first store in Amman. Carrefour Amman is a joint venture between Majid Al Futtaim Group and Carrefour France. The 110,000 sqft store is located in City Mall; the largest shopping centre in Jordan.
