New Dubai beachfront restaurant

Maya, the first five-star Mexican restaurant in the region, has opened its doors on the beachfront at Le Royal Meridien. Mexican-born celebrity chef Richard Sandoval is the inspiration behind the restaurant which offers dining under the stars on a spacious terrace and a rooftop bar.

DCCI pushes Dubai retail

Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry is promoting Dubai and its retail sector through a TV advertising campaign, it said in a statement. The industry body wanted Dubai to be seen as the retail hub of the UAE that promises a "unique shopping experience for every shopper".

Bahrain wants women spectators

Bahraini women will be admitted for free to this season's local football matches, in a move to boost the number of female spectators at games, Gulf News reported. Opponents of the scheme say the plan will neither increase the number of women going to games nor improve the quality of matches.

Dubai community theatre opens

Dubai Community Theatre and Arts Centre in the Mall of the Emirates opens today (Wednesday), according to Gulf News. The larger of the centre's two theatres has a capacity for 543 people and space for a live orchestra. Promoters hope the non-profit creative centre will become a regional hub for the arts.

Luxury brand retailer Rivoli Group has opened the first Blancpain watch boutique in Dubai, UAE. Blancpain executives say the UAE was chosen as the location because of its "immense growth potential". The boutique is located at Emirates Towers Boulevard.

ICC Dubai Global Cricket Academy

The International Cricket Council is planning to build a Global Cricket Academy in Dubai, which will include two international grounds and six indoor pitches. The academy will specialise in training cricketers, umpires, curators and administrators. It is planned to open in early 2008.

Six Senses, Jumeirah split

Six Senses Spas will no longer operate the spa at Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai following an agreement with Jumeirah whereby both organisations will pursue individual initiatives. Six Senses will initially focus on the opening of the Six Senses Spa at Sharq Village and Spa in Doha towards the end of this year, the Ma'in Hot Springs in Jordan and the Evason Hideaway at Zighy Bay, Oman.

World Trade Club re-opens

The World Trade Club, located on the 33rd floor of the World Trade Centre Tower in Dubai, has re-opened following a major refurbishment. The club's facilities include the Seven Sands restaurant, four private function rooms, a boardroom and Club Room. The World Trade Club is affiliated with the World Trade Centre Association and 165 World Trade Clubs internationally.

Sorenstam secures Dubai crown

A final round of 69 gave Annika Sorenstam victory in the inaugural Dubai Ladies Masters. Her 18 under par total of 270 enabled her to beat fellow Swede Helen Alfredsson by a comfortable six shots. Sorenstam's victory was her fifth of the season and it helped Britain's Laura Davies secure top spot in the European Tour money list for a seventh time.

Welsh target UAE lamb sector

The National Assembly of Wales is keen to see Welsh lamb capture around 10% of the market in the UAE within the next few years following the recent lifting of an import ban on the meat, reported Gulf News. Welsh farmers are to target the top end of the UAE market including hotels and high class retailers. The ban was imposed in 2001 amid concerns over foot and mouth disease.

AD Golf Club makes changes

The Abu Dhabi Golf Club, the location for the PGA European Tour's Abu Dhabi Golf Championship taking place in January next year, is to upgrade its entrance, including major approach landscaping, and improve signage. Course improvements are also underway in a bid to increase the degree of difficulty for players. The course is being extended to almost 7,400 yards, new bunkers are being added and pin positions adjusted.

Oman Eid festival nears end

The Eid festival at the Oman International Exhibition Centre is now entering its last few days. More than 400 exhibitors are attending the nine day shopping event. Snack foods from Thailand, embroidered products from Syria, honey from Yemen, shoes and bags from the UAE and a range of garments from China have all proved popular with visitors.

Sorenstam pulls well clear

Sweden's Annika Sorenstam extended her lead to seven shots during yesterday's third round of the inaugural Dubai Ladies Masters at the Emirates Golf Club. The world number one carded a 68 to move to 15 under par, with Australia's Karrie Webb, who shot a 70, on eight under. Another Swede, Helen Alfredsson, has moved into third on seven under.

Sorenstam out in front in Dubai

World number one golfer Annika Sorenstam is out in front at the halfway point in the Dubai Ladies Masters at the Emirates Golf Club, with her two round score of 133 putting her 11 under par. The Swedish star has built up a five shot lead in the 500,000 euro event. Australia's Karrie Webb lies second, with England's Trish Johnson one of three players a further shot behind.

Waselly gets revamp

UAE food delivery website Waselly.com has undergone a revamp and now has a new façade. Managing Partner, Mohammed Nasser, said that the new design is meant to facilitate customers' navigation and to provide faster and better services to both food providers and consumers. Since it launched in June, Waselly has chalked up around 5,000 subscribers.
