DSF cancelled, Ruler dead

The Dubai Shopping Festival, that was due to start today, has been cancelled after the sudden death of the Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, in Australia earlier today. Officials said to await a further announcement about the event.

Dubai, Russia form diamond group

The Dubai Metals and Commodities Centre is setting up a diamond club in partnership with Russian institutions Alrosa and Smolensk Kristall to increase cooperation between sector companies in Dubai and Russia. The Dubai Russia Diamond Working Group will focus on the exchange of market information.

DDF, $590m sales for 2005

Dubai Duty Free has posted sales worth $590m in 2005, an increase of 19% over 2004, according to Gulf News. December set a new monthly record when sales reached $60m. The Arrivals section grew by 20%, and now accounts for 8% of total sales.

Dairy price fury

The UAE's Consumer Cooperative Union stopped selling dairy products as of Monday in protest against recent price hikes, reported Gulf News. Other supermarket outlets have raised prices. Prices of dairy products recently went up by 2-10% following a directive from the UAE Juice and Dairy Producers Group. The UAE Cabinet has instructed the ministries of Finance and Economy to address the issue.

Awafi Festival for families

Ras Al Khaimah's Awafi Festival is running on a family theme this year, and will have four major campsites with a variety of activities planned for families, reported Gulf News. The government has allocated a bigger budget for this year's event, with designs on putting the festival on the international calendar. The festival, which runs from 11-27 January, will host a series of cultural, artistic, and sports activities.
