IT retail event Gitex Shopper and Consumer Electronics Expo 2006 is now in full swing at the Airport Expo Dubai. More than 120,000 visitors are expected to attend the show which closes on Friday. Products that are expected to top the list in sales this year include mobile phones, PDAs and handhelds, digital cameras, laptops, PCs and home entertainment products.

Supermarket chain Spinneys has doubled its market share over the past five years according to its CEO Johannes CF Holtzhausen and cited by Emirates Today. The retailer currently has 21 stores in the UAE, with 14 in Dubai, five in Sharjah and two in Abu Dhabi. Holtzhausen said that the firm is looking at opening stores in Bahrain and Qatar; Spinneys already has outlets in Oman and the Seychelles.

Dubai's Landmark Group is shortly to open a new 135,000 sqft Emax electronics store in Sharjah, reported Arab News. The store will offer more than 300 different brands of consumer electronics and home appliances. A further 130,000 sqft store will open on Dubai's Sheikh Zayed Road soon and plans are in place for outlets in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar and Bahrain.

The 27 sponsors for this year's Dubai Shopping Festival have been announced. The programme of events will run for an extended period of 45 days from 20 December 2006 to 2 February 2007. Organisers expect a 20% increase in sales and 15% increase in visitors compared to the last edition.

Dubai-based bookstore chain Magrudy's has reopened its renovated Jumeirah shop. The store takes up 5,000 sqft of retail space over two floors. Magrudy's has five Dubai outlets, with a sixth due to open early 2007 in Dubai Festival City. It will also open its first Abu Dhabi shop next year.

Men's fashion label Fabio Inghirami has opened its first Middle East outlet at Dubai's Burjuman Centre. The company's specialty is its Cottonstir shirt with 'non-iron technology'. Fabio will open its second store at The Walk, Jumeirah Beach Residence in March 2007.

Dr Reddy's Laboratories, India's second largest pharmaceutical company, has entered the Bahrain market, Gulf Daily News reported. Hamad Town Pharmacy is the company's marketing partner in Bahrain. Dr Reddy's sells pharmaceutical products in more than 100 countries.
Fujairah International Airport has opened its new 10,000 sqft duty free shopping area, according to Gulf News. Other facilities planned include airport restaurants. The airport is undergoing major expansion work, which has seen air traffic increase by 28% this year, the report said.

Magrudy's, the Dubai-based book store chain, is set to expand across the GCC via franchise agreements, with plans in place to open three stores in Qatar, in partnership with Doha's Falcon Home Entertainment. Similar deals are under negotiation in other GCC countries. Magrudy's now has five Dubai outlets with a sixth flagship store opening in Dubai Festival City early next year along with its first branch in Abu Dhabi.

Bahrain's winter sale kicks off on November 29 and will last for at least a fortnight, reported TradeArabia. The Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry said that traders could extend the sale if they wished to do so. Outlets must offer discounts of at least 20%, with food item reductions requiring a minimum price cut of 10%.
Sony's much delayed PlayStation 3 games console hit the shops in Japan yesterday and sold out in a matter of hours, reported Reuters. Sony has only been able to ready 100,000 units for its Japan debut and around 400,000 will be available in the US when it goes on sale on Friday. Sony expects to lose money on the PS3 for some while due to high research and production costs.
British celebrity interior designer Linda Barker is to appear at the Jotun Inspiring Ideas Theatre at the Dubai Ideal Home Show 2006, taking place at the Airport Expo Dubai from November 30-December 3. Barker will be appearing along with other celebrity designers including Paul Bishop, Gordon Russell and Mary Gilliatt, as well as landscape expert Grant Donald and Feng Shui consultant Georgia Kiafi.
