Geant opens in Al Kharj

French retail chain Geant has opened a new hypermarket in Al Kharj, a town situated about 85 kilometres east of Riyadh, reported Arab News. The store, located in the Jaw Mall, covers an area of 45,000 sqft and will sell around 55,000 products. The hypermarket is presently running a launch promotion.

Roberto Coin at Wafi

Italian jeweller Roberto Coin, in partnership with the UAE based Damas, has opened a stand-alone boutique at Dubai's Wafi City. The new outlet occupies 800 sqft on the ground floor in Wafi's new extension and precedes the opening of other Roberto Coin stores in Italy, Macau, Azerbaijan and the US.

DGJG forms Chinese connection

The Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group (DGJG) has been invited by the Chamber of Commerce for Jewellery and Precious Metals Industry, China, to act as its regional consultants. The DGJG will primarily work to establish strong business links between jewellery firms in the Gulf and their counterparts in China. China's jewellery sector is currently seeing annual growth of 10% and annual sales are worth an estimated $10bn.

Dubai Outlet Mall to open

Dubai Outlet Mall is now scheduled to open on August 22 and will feature around 100 stores initially, reported Gulf News. The mall, located in Dubailand on the Dubai-Al Ain road, will see a further 140 stores open their doors in September. Retailers will include the likes of Esprit, Diesel and the Paris Gallery.

New Dubai used car complex

Dubai Municipality will soon be opening two of its prestigious investment projects including the Dhs95m annex of Used Cars Complex at Ras Al Khor, and the Dhs108m Cold Stores project at the Dubai Central Vegetable and Fruits Market in Al Awir. The annex of the used car complex includes eight steel-structured complexes consisting 74 showrooms whose areas range from 360 square meters to 630 square meters.

Al Islami seeks UK halal market

Dubai-based meat producer Al Islami and leading UK foodservice distributor 3663 First For Foodservice are near an agreement to provide halal meat products in the UK, ArabianBusiness.com reported. The move will enable Al Islami to establish a foothold in the UK's $4 billion halal meat sector.

Aujan invests $100m in Iran

Aujan Industries is investing $100 million in two factories in Iran, Gulf News reported. The company, whose brands include Rani brand juice, is building one beverage filling plant and one aluminium can making factory near Tehran. Aujan also plans to invest $30m to expand its manufacturing plant in Dubai Investment Park and modernise its Dammam plant.

Jumeirah's 150 new restaurants

Jumeirah Branded Restaurants, a division of the Jumeirah hotel chain announced plans to open 150 restaurants within five years in several countries, reported Gulf News. Jumeirah is also expanding its East Asian concept Noodle House in Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar and Oman up to 100 outlets by 2012.

Air Miles Bahrain adds 70 brands

Air Miles, the Middle East's leading loyalty programme, has signed with global insurance leader, Royal & SunAlliance in Bahrain, expanding its partner network in Bahrain to over 70 multinational and local brands. The free-to-join loyalty programme, which is successfully run in the UAE and Qatar, launched in Bahrain earlier this year and has since signed up over 120,000 Air Miles members.

Iraqi clothes for US

Clothes made in Iraq could shortly be on sale in the US, reported the AFP. Iraqi textile and leather factories are close to signing deals with retailers such as Wal-Mart and JC Penney. If an agreement can be reached, up to 12,000 leather jackets will be sent from a factory in Baghdad, 20,000 suits will come from a facility in Najaf and clothes for teenagers will be exported from Mosul.

Al Islami in UK agreement

UAE based halal food producer Al Islami Foods is on the verge of signing a joint venture deal with the UK's 3663 First For Foodservice, a food distributor, which will see it offer its products to around 2m Muslims in Britain. The halal food market in the UK is estimated to be worth around $4bn and Al Islami hopes the tie-up will eventually lead to the firm accessing continental Europe.

NMC, Chakola in tie-up

The UAE's NMC Trading, which specialises in pharmaceuticals trading and manufacturing as well as consumer goods for local sale and export, has tied up with India's Chakola Ayurvedics, a manufacturer of beauty care products, according to agency reports. NMC will market and distribute Chakola's range of products in the UAE.

Five Barneys for Istithmar

Istithmar plans to open up to five new Barneys stores, focusing initially on the US market, following its acquisition of the retail chain last week for $942.3m from the Jones Apparel Group, according to agency reports. Istithmar CEO David Jackson estimated that each store would cost around $20m. The firm also hopes to open more Barneys stores in Asia and wants to ramp up online sales.

Optoma Mideast sales boost

Optoma, a global vendor of digital projectors based on digital light processing from Texas Instruments, has revealed that its H1 shipments to the Middle East region grew by 150% when compared to the same period last year. Optoma's main markets are the US and Europe but the firm is looking to increase its regional presence and is focusing on the professional, home and government sectors.
