Kuwait-based Madi International has signed an exclusive distribution agreement with US-based Essie Cosmetics to launch and expandthe Essie brand in the UAE, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain and Lebanon. Madi International said it will ensure a professional coverage to position Essie in selective hair salons with proper training to salons staff, in addition to marketing support activities.

Mars GCC, a leading regional manufacturer of confectionary products, has announced today the opening of its two storey office expansion area with an investment worth of Dhs10m. The expansion doubles the size of the company's office at Jebel Ali Free Zone, which has seen the number of Mars associates triple in number over the past 10 years to reach almost 300.

Damas International, a Dubai-based jeweller and watch retailer, has entered into a strategic alliance with India's Gitanjali Gems to open over 100 stores by 2014, P.K. Dutta, Group Chief Financial Officer Damas Jewellery revealed. 'We will be partnering with the well known Gitanjali jewellery group in India with Damas holding about 51% stake,' Dutta said in a statement. 'The transaction value for Damas will be around Dhs136 million (180 crores) to be infused in stages. We will open stores under our own brand name but we have not ruled out any opportunity to take over existing stores there, if feasible.'

Egypt's trade ministry plans to double export duties on rice to LE2,000 ($358) per ton, the daily al Mal has reported. Egypt's trade ministry had informed companies which sell rice to the state's General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC) of the increase, the council member has said.
Luxury goods manufacturer Montblanc has announced the expansion of its retail distribution network in Saudi Arabia with the opening of a second boutique in the kingdom, located in Red Sea Mall, Jeddah in partnership with luxury retailer Paris Gallery. The new Montblanc boutique will showcase the brand's fine jewellery collection and the unique 'Montblanc Diamond' which is artistically cut in the shape of the Montblanc star.
UK-based department store brand, Miss Selfridge, in partnership with Qatar's Retail International, has opened a boutique at Villaggio Mall in the Qatari capital, Doha. The new fashion store features this year's summer collection of designs, influenced predominantly by the fashion and music of the 1980s.
Retail gold sales in Abu Dhabi has reported a 30% increase in June due to holiday buying, Reuters has reported. Jewellers attributed in the increase in spending on gold bars and jewelry from mainly Asians as gifts back home every year in the summer. Strong sales are expected to continue until mid-July.

South Korea-based cosmetics retail chain Missha has opened its first seven stores in Saudi Arabia, in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dahran, Medina and Yanbu. The stores offer a portfolio of over 800 products ranging from colour cosmetics, skincare, bath and body care lines for men and women of all age groups. Missha currently operates in UAE, Bahrain and Oman through exclusive franchise partners Al Tayer Trends, a company of Al Tayer Group.
A new report by CB Richard Ellis has found that retail rents in Dubai and Abu Dhabi dropped for the first time in at least a decade in the first quarter of this year. The report said retail rents in Dubai fell 11% in Q1, while rents in Abu Dhabi slipped 3.5%. The drop reflects the decrease in retail sales caused by the global economic downturn, the report said.

EMKE Group, one of the largest retail chains in the Gulf, has finalized its plans to expand its customer reach across Abu Dhabi by investing Dhs1.5bn in the next 18-months by opening seven new shopping malls and hypermarkets in the emirate of Abu Dhabi alone, a plan which will be completed by the end of 2010, Khaleej Times has reported. 'We are also looking for new locations to expand our Lulu Express concept, especially in upcoming residential suburbs,' the group's managing director Yusuffali told the daily.

Dubai Municipality is cracking down on manufacturers and distributors of cosmetics and toiletries which contain banned substances such as arsenic, lead and jelly or fat produced from swine or dogs, Emirates Business has reported. Redha Hassan Salman, Head of the municipality's Public Health and Safety Department has said that companies exporting these products into the UAE have to obtain a certificate from the approved health authorities in the country of origin and get them endorsed by the UAE mission there.

Capinnova Investment Bank, the Sharia-compliant investment banking subsidiary of Bank of Bahrain and Kuwait (BBK), has said it will co-invest $50m into what will be the largest shopping mall in Bahrain's Muharraq area. Work on the mall has already begun and it is due for completion during the second half of 2010.
Egypt-based real estate developer Palm Hills Developments (PHD) has announced its expansion into shopping centers, and is now developing the first mall in Katameya to offer distinctive merchandise mix to residents of Rehab City, Heliopolis, Nasr City, New Cairo and Maadi as well as the dense college student's community. Landmark Group is set to operate a two-floor, 4100sqm department store to showcase its brands such as the Baby Shop, Shoe Mart, and Lifestyle.
Galadari Ice Cream Co. (GICC), the licensee for Baskin-Robbins in the GCC has opened its 450th store in the region at the Palm Jumeirah in Dubai. GICC has also announced its plans to open 45 new stores in the region and is looking at entering new markets across Africa and Middle East.

MP Shamlal Ahmed, Managing Director, International Operations of India's Malabar Gold has said the group will open its 28th outlet today at the LuLu Hypermarket in Al Ghusais, which to be followed by a number of retail outlets in the different branches of LuLu hypermarkets in the UAE. The group is spending Dhs300m on its retail expansion. In September, the group will open a showroom at Al Khail Mall in Al Quoz in Dubai. 'The worst part of the recession is over and the group has been able to achieve its business targets in the UAE,' Ahmed said.
