Galadari opens 450 Baskin Robbins

Galadari Ice Cream Co. (GICC), the licensee for Baskin-Robbins in the GCC has opened its 450th store in the region at the Palm Jumeirah in Dubai. GICC has also announced its plans to open 45 new stores in the region and is looking at entering new markets across Africa and Middle East.

Malabar Gold plans Dhs300m UAE growth

MP Shamlal Ahmed, Managing Director, International Operations of India's Malabar Gold has said the group will open its 28th outlet today at the LuLu Hypermarket in Al Ghusais, which to be followed by a number of retail outlets in the different branches of LuLu hypermarkets in the UAE. The group is spending Dhs300m on its retail expansion. In September, the group will open a showroom at Al Khail Mall in Al Quoz in Dubai. 'The worst part of the recession is over and the group has been able to achieve its business targets in the UAE,' Ahmed said.

Panasonic extends warranty cover to the Mideast

Global electronics retailer Panasonic has announced its Care Plus International Warranty will be available on all Panasonic consumer electronics sold in the GCC, Syria, Lebanon and Egypt. The retailer is also setting up three call centres in the region - one each in the UAE, Iran and Lebanon - to boost customer service in the region.

Qatar retailers told not to raise prices

Qatar's Department of Consumer Protection at the Ministry of Business and Trade has asked all retailers and wholesalers in the country not to raise the prices of any commodity without prior permission of the authorities. Sheikh Jassim bin Jabor Al Thani, Director of the Department has said that the department did not interfere in fixing commodity prices in the country, except in rare cases, one of which was when the prices of soft drinks and beverages were raised in the local market. The department asked traders to revert to the old prices.

Adidas opens first Originals store in Saudi

Adidas Originals has announced the opening of its first Originals retail store in Saudi Arabia. The new 200 square meter store in Nojoud Center, Al Tahlia Street in Jeddah is the first store that is solely dedicated to its lifestyle fashion range carrying the classic adidas Trefoilm the company said. The new store will feature the Fall/Winter 2009 collection, which continues the year-long celebration of adidas' 60th anniversary.

Emaar's Mall revenue to double in 2009

Emaar Properties has said that it expects revenue from its malls and retail business this year to double to as much as Dhs1 billion ($272 million), boosted by new malls it is currently building in Egypt, Syria and Turkey. The retail business is predicted to account for 9% of Emaar's total revenue by the end of the year, up from 3.1% in 2008,

Saudi to launch study on consumer protection

Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Commerce and Industry has appointed Arthur D. Little, a global management consulting firm, to advise the ministry on the strategy and optimal design for developing a consumer protection system in the kingdom. The consultancy firm has supported the development of several regulatory regimes in Saudi Arabia such as telecommunication, financial markets, television, radio media and competition protection.

Nestle recalls cookie dough in Bahrain

Nestlé has sent an email to its retailers in Bahrain to recall and destroy packets of cookie dough over fears of E-coli contamination, the Gulf Daily News reported. Many of Bahrain's biggest supermarkets have confirmed they had taken the products off their shelves after being informed of the outbreak.

UAE ranks 4th in global retail index

The UAE has jumped from 16th place to number four in the ranks of most potentially lucrative markets in the world for retailers, according to AT Kearney's annual Global Retail Development Index. The report ranks 30 emerging countries with India leading the index, ahead of Russia, China, then the UAE. Saudi Arabia bagged fifth, up by two places.

Payless ShoeSource opens first store in UAE

US-based Payless ShoeSource and its franchisee partner, MH Alshaya Co, have announced the grand opening of the first Payless store in the UAE, with a 227-square-meter store located in Bawadi Mall, Al Ain. Payless now has four stores in the Middle East, which feature a wide assortment of shoes and accessories for the family including branded products for women, men and children covering a range of wearing occasions.

Swine flu rumours false, says McDonald's

McDonald's Arabia has been forced to issue a denial that any of its employees have been infected with the H1N1 swine flu virus and that it has had to close one of its retail food outlets, following rumours spread by mobile SMS messages and across the internet. It said the text messages, sent over the past week, were 'not true whatsoever' and urged people to instead rely on 'credible information' from 'official bodies'. Government ministries have also dismissed the rumours.

Wendy's/Arby's to open 135 stores in Middle East

US fast-food chain Wendy's/Arby's Group has signed a deal with a Saudi Arabia-based franchisee to open 135 dual-branded restaurants in the Middle East and North Africa. The restaurants, the first international locations to offer both Wendy's and Arby's menus, will be run by a unit of Al Jammaz Group. The stores will open in 9 countries over the next 10 years, starting with a Saudi location in early 2010.
