Baniyas inks Carrefour deal

Baniyas Investment and Development Company (BID) has signed up the French chain Carrefour as the anchor hypermarket for its mall at Bawabat Al Sharq in Bani Yas, Abu Dhabi. Carrefour at Bawabat Al Sharq will be the first international hypermarket chain outside the main island of Abu Dhabi.

Jordan sets up low-cost food company

Jordan has established a new state-owned company, National Company for Food Security and Supply, which will import foodstuff to sell to the public at affordable prices, Jordan Times has reported. The new company will soon start operating in Jordan with a registered capital is JD500,000, and operational capital of JD40m.

Landmark opens RAK Centrepoint

Landmark Group has launched the first Centrepoint store in the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. The new Centrepoint covers a total of 65,000 square feet, and is the group's ninth store in the UAE. Centrepoint features Babyshop, Splash, Shoe Mart, Beautybay and Lifestyle.

Aswaaq inks Monoprix tie-in

Dubai-based Aswaaq, a government-owned firm, has signed an exclusive partnership agreement with French corporation Monoprix to bring international products to aswaaq centres across Dubai. The supply agreement will allow aswaaq to introduce an exclusive range of new products including 'everything from fresh Italian cheeses to chocolate mousse airlifted from France,' Abdul Basset Al Janahi, CEO of aswaaq said. 'The supply agreement shall be entered into for a term of one year, automatically renewable for successive periods of one year unless otherwise agreed,' he added.

Kuwait sees fall in back-to-school sales

Kuwait's major retail stores have reported lower sales figures from their back to school section than those of previous years, Al-Watan has reported. However, sales are expected to pick up with the gradual return to school of the intermediate and elementary stages next week, a Carrefour executive said. 'Although the usual spike in sales will not happen this year, sales are gradually improving,' he said.

UAE sheikh eyes takeover of Christian Lacroix

French fashion house Christian Lacroix is considering a takeover offer from a UAE sheikh, Reuters has reported. 'We are close to reaching a solution with the sheikh of Ajman ... generally speaking, it's very satisfactory,' said Regis Valliot, the administrator for the company. The Ajman sheikh is a nephew of Humayd ibn Rashid Al Nuaimi, the Ruler of Ajman. Christian Lacroix was once part of the French luxury goods group LVMH, but now belongs to the Falic family, which owns the American retail group Duty Free Americas.

Crate and Barrel to open stores in Dubai

US-based home furnishing retail chain, Crate & Barrel has signed a franchise agreement with Dubai-based Al Tayer Group to open stores in the Middle East in 2010. The company said it plans to open stores in Dubai's Mall of the Emirates and Mirdif City Centre. The stores will be managed by Al Tayer Trends, a lifestyle retail unit for the franchise company, the retailer said.

First Japanese fruit gift shop opens in Dubai

The first dedicated store in Dubai selling premium Japanese fruits, Oishii Nippon (A Taste of Japan), has been officially opened on the ground floor of the Jumeirah Center, under the management of Fit Fresh. Launched by Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries as part of a major initiative to promote premium Japanese food products in the Arab region, Oishii Nippon is administered by Kintetsu World Express Sales (KWE), and supported by Zen-Noh, National Federation of Agricultural Co-operative Associations.

LG unveils new desktop monitors

LG Electronics Gulf has unveiled its designer series of desktop monitors, the W86. Utilizing advanced LED backlighting, the new W86 is one-third slimmer and lighter than most CCFL-backlit monitors, LG said. The new line offers a dynamic contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1, in addition to 40% less power consumption than normal CCFL monitors.

Luxury watchmaker to open Qatar outlet

Geneva-based watchmaker, Roger Dubuis plans to open a store in the Qatari capital, Doha. Matthias Schuler, the firm's CEO, will visit Qatar on October 1 to look into the health of the luxury market in Qatar, as well as discuss opportunities and challenges in the country, a company spokesperson said.

Al Futtaim opens Iranian hypermarket

Dubai-based retail giant, Majid Al Futtaim Group has opened a retail outlet in the Iranian capital, Tehran, selling goods ranging from fruit and vegetables to clothes and school supplies. The 9,000-square-meter Hyperstar, was supposed to open under the Carrefour brand, but the world's second largest retailer said it would not get involved in the project. The store's managing director, Mark Courboin, was quoted last month by Iran's official news agency IRNA as saying:"Due to some political problems between Iran and France, Carrefour has not permitted us to use its name here."

Landmark plans expansion in India

Dubai-based retail conglomerate Landmark Group plans to double its revenue in India to $627m in two-and-a-half years by investing $209m through its Indian arm, Lifestyle International Pvt. Ltd. The investment will be made over the next two years to expand the retailer's various formats, with an emphasis on Lifestyle and Home Centre. The group has also said it is planning to enter tier II cities such as Kanpur and Nagpur in 2011-12, with slightly lower prices.

Egypt extends rice export ban

Egyptian trade ministry has extended its ban on rice exports by another year to October 2010, Reuters has reported. The country aims to reduce its domestic rice production to two million tons per year from 2.4 million tons to save water, trade minister Rachid Mohamed Rachid said. The ban was imposed on March last year.
