Nordsee to open in Middle East

German fast-food restaurant chain Nordsee is set to open its first outlet in the Middle East, at The Dubai Mall in association with Ocean Fresh Enterprises, the Nordsee master franchisee for the Mena region. In addition to selling raw and smoked seafood, the seafood chain also sells a variety of meals and products prepared from seafood including sandwiches and salads.

Qatar retailer booked for violating price freeze

A major shopping outlet in Doha has been charged with not adhering to a ministerial decision which froze the prices of 104 consumer items of mass use during the holy month of Ramadan, The Peninsula has reported. The matter, which was referred to the public prosecution, marks the first time any retail outlet has been booked by law enforcement agencies in Qatar for price manipulation.

14 retailers open at Festival Centre

Fourteen new international retailers have recently opened shops at the Festival Centre in Dubai 
Festival City, Khaleej Times has reported. Among the new brands are Build-a-Bear Workshop, Laura Ashley, Jerretelle Trading and Riverwood.

Ikea to set up on Yas island

Aldar Properties has signed an agreement with the Al-Futtaim Group to build the largest Ikea regional store on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, The National has reported. Ikea, which started its UAE operations in Dubai in 1991, has an existing store in Abu Dhabi at the Marina Mall, in addition to a store in Dubai's Festival City, currently the largest in the region, which opened in 2005.

Louis Vuitton to expand into Lebanon

Louis Vuitton, the French fashion brand, has announced it is in the 'final stages' of a planned expansion into Lebanon. 'The next market where there are opportunities is clearly Lebanon, which has been resilient to the crisis and has already shown to be a strong market for luxury,' Damien Vernet, the company's general manager for Middle East and India operations told Reuters. The brand is also looking into Egypt, Jordan and Syria as possible markets, he added.

European cosmetics group opens Dubai office

Perfumes Y Diseno, a European cosmetics and perfumes distributor, has set up its regional office at Dubai Airport Freezone to tap the UAE and Gulf markets. PYD Middle East Distribution, which is launching with an initial investment of $2.9m, represents three high end perfume brands J. Del Pozo, Roberto Verino and Tous, and plans to open tie ups with retail chains in the UAE and across the Gulf.

Shoe Mart, the fashion footwear retailer, has launched its 25th regional store with a brand new retail concept at The Dubai Mall. H and M opens its first store in Alexandria, Egypt

Hennes & Mauritz, the Sweden-based fashion retailer, has announced plans to open its first H&M store in Egypt's Mediterranean port city of Alexandria at the City Centre Mall. The 1500 square metres store will carry all H&M concepts of fashion for ladies, men and kids. The new outlet will be the firm's second in Egypt, in addition to the current 31 stores spanning across the Middle East.

Qatar to ban fake electrical goods

Dr Mohammed Saif Al Kuwari, Director of Qatar Standards and Specifications (QSS) has said that import of counterfeit electrical goods will be banned by 2010. QSS inspection squad has launched a crackdown in response to forged and electrical goods of inferior quality flooding the market, Al Kuwari said.

The UK's value department store Matalan has opened its first store in the UAE at the Arabian Center Mall. Solely distributed in the Middle East by the Business Trading Company, the outlet at the Arabian Center offers a range of home wares to ladies', men's and children's clothing, lingerie, footwear and accessories.

Ordning and Reda expands in UAE

Swedish brand Ordning and Reda has opened at Ibn Battuta Mall, its second showroom in the UAE. The band has earlier opened at the DIFC Lifestyle. Enoc launches Metro stores

Emirates National Oil Company (Enoc) has said that its three 'Zoom' retail stores make the company the largest operator of convenience stores at Dubai Metro stations. Rivoli plans expansion in Saudi

Adel Zarouni, managing director of UAE-based luxury retailer Rivoli Group, said his company is planning a major expansion Saudi Arabia. He said he expects that in three years time the company's operations in the kingdom will be bigger than in the UAE. 'Rivoli's expansion plan [in Saudi Arabia] will be achieved in phases,' he told Gulf News. 'We will have between 60 to 80 retail outlets in the first phase of business expansion to reach up to 300 stores within three years.'

Virgin to launch basic needs store in Dubai

Nisreen Shocair, Regional President of Virgin Megastores, said the retailer is set to open the first in a series of basic-needs stores in select residential communities across Dubai, Gulf News has reported. The new stores will only offer essentials, such as batteries, chargers and emergency gifts, she said. 'We wouldn't sell laptops, we would sell more covers, more batteries, more chargers, toners, things that people need every day and can just come in and get it,' the retailer's regional president, Nisreen Shocair, told the daily. The first of these stores will be launched within six months.
