French couture house Lanvin, in partnership with luxury retailer UAE Trading, is to open its largest Middle East boutique in Dubai Mall's Fashion Avenue. The 220 square metre shop is the brand's second of two stand alone boutiques in the UAE, offering male and female collections under one roof. Lanvin is also available in Emirates Towers and at Harvey Nichols, SAKS Fifth Avenue and at Rodeo Drive boutiques in the UAE.

The UAE's Ministry of Economy has said that food prices during Ramadan have fallen by between 20% and 30% compared with the holy month last year, the National has reported. Dr Hashim al Nuaimi, Director of the Ministry's Consumer Protection Department, said the price fall was because of the Ministry's earlier planning for Ramadan. It signed agreements with 62 UAE supermarkets around key food items, such as meat, fish and vegetables, with prices dropping by as much as 40%. Inspectors will inspect retailers during Ramadan to check prices, he added.

Qatar's food monitoring body of the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning has stopped shops from selling two brands of oatmeal after they were found to contain gelatine from pigs, the Peninsula has reported. The oatmeal products were produced by Lucky Charm and General Mills. Pig content is forbidden in Qatar, Dr. Sheikh Mohammed Al Thani, Director of Public Health, Supreme Council for Health said.
According to the latest retail report by the UK-based Business Monitor International (BMI), retail sales in the UAE are forecast to grow by 59% by 2013. It estimates retail spending in the country will rise to almost $165bn (Dhs606bn) by 2013 from $103.5bn in 2008. Elsewhere in the Gulf, retails sales are also expected to grow over the same period, with Saudi Arabia up 25%, Bahrain up 11% and Kuwait up 31%.

The 76,000sqft Sega Republic indoor theme park has opened its gates on August 21, 2009 at The Dubai Mall. Visitors can look forward to over 150 amusement games developed by Emaar Retail in association with Japan-based Sega Corporation. The various attractions are spread over five themed zones featuring motion-simulators to simulated sports games, classic carnival games and prize-winning redemption games.

Areej, the perfume and cosmetic retail chain, has launched its first two new stores in Saudi Arabia, at Riyadh Gallery and Dhahran Mall. The two stores offer a wide collection of international brands including Dior, Guerlain, Chanel, Lancome Yves Saint Laurent, Givenchy, Clarins, Estee Lauder, Clinique, La Prairie, Calvin Klein, Tom Ford and Armani. The two new outlets bring the total number of Areej stores across the Middle East to 17.
Doha Sooq, Doha Bank's e-mall, has announced a tie-up with Jumbo Electronics, a member of Ahmed Bin Said Al Thani & Partners, to meet the increasing demand of Doha residents who are switching over to web-shopping, the Peninsula has reported. The new partnership will increase Jumbo Electronics' sales according to Ranjith Philip Abraham of Jumbo Electronics.
Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) has announced that Gitex Shopper & Consumer Electronics Expo 2009 will open across two full weekends to provide visitors with more time to take advantage of the deals and promotions on a wide variety of technology. The decision was made 'in response to increased customer demand,' DWTC has said. The show will be held at Airport Expo Dubai from the 17-24 October 2009.

Qatar's Ministry of Business and Trade has imposed a price freeze on all retail outlets in the country under which they are bound to sell basic food items to consumers at fixed rates during Ramadan, the Peninsula has reported. Retailers hiking the prices of any of the 104 items figuring on the ministerial list are liable to be punished as inspectors from the Consumer Protection Department have been given judicial powers to act against violators, the ministry has said. The decision became effective Sunday and will remain valid until the last day of the fasting month, which is slated to begin on August 22.
Mall of the Emirates has said that ten new stores will open along the link between the mall and its metro station. Seven new retailers, Home Sweet Home, Emax, E-City, Paperchase, Borders Express, Cold Stone Creamery and Nokia will open up their first stores in the metro link, while UAE Exchange will open their second outlet at the mall and two existing retailers, Jacky's and Better Life, will be relocating to the area.

According to the Business Monitor International's 'Egypt Retail Report Q3 2009', Egypt's retail sales will grow from around $63.27bn in 2008 to $118.5bn by 2013, the Saudi Gazette has reported. The predicted growth in Egypt's retail sales is attributed to an extremely large and youthful population, the emergence of a more affluent middle class, a vibrant tourism industry, and the growing acceptance of modern retail concepts, the report has noted. Automotive sales are forecast to rise by nearly 97% during the period, from $9.96bn in 2008 to $19.61bn by 2013, the report has added.
Abu Dhabi-based EMKE Group, one of the largest retail chains in the Middle East, has announced its expansion plans for the Gulf region, in addition to one multi-purpose property in India, Khaleej Times has reported. The group plans to open 14 new hypermarkets and shopping malls in the Gulf region by the end of 2010, with a total investment of Dhs3.2bn, in addition to seven more stores in Abu Dhabi by next year with an investment of Dhs1.5bn. The retailer has also allocated Dhs1.1bn for its maiden project in Cochin, India.

Reel Cinemas has opened 10 screens, which has begu operating at The Dubai Mall. Developed by Reel Entertainment LLC, the joint venture of Emaar Retail and Singapore-based premier entertainment provider Cathay Organisation Holdings Ltd, Reel Cinemas will offer a total of 22 screens and seating for 2,800. Twelve other screens are set to operate later this year.

Dubai-based ETA-Star Retail and the India-based Copper Chimney Group have signed an agreement to open Copper Chimney, the popular Indian restaurant at the Meadow's Town Centre in Dubai later this year. Copper Chimney, established in Mumbai in 1972, serves cuisine from the North West Frontier Province and Punjab.
