  • Indian firm enters UAE tea market

  • Wagh Bakri Tea Group, India's largest privately held tea company, is entering the UAE's retail market for the first time, reported Gulf News. Al Maya Group will serve as the company's UAE distributor. Wagh Bakri Tea Group company has an annual turnover of $65m and sells more than 20 million kilos of tea worldwide each year.

  • Dubai shopping malls unsustainable

  • Shopping malls in Dubai are the trickiest real estate sector in the emirate, as they risk saturation and being economically unviable. Nicholas MacLean, Managing Director of CB Richard Ellis, estimated that by 2010 shopping malls will have a spend of $2,003 per square foot, which is ‘not sustainable’.

  • Caparol has opened its first retail outlet in Abu Dhabi, paving way for home owners and developers to shop Caparol products. Consumers can bring along to the store selected fabrics to place alongside different paint colours and textures, as well preview visual representations of the final paint work.

  • Direct selling comes to Dubai

  • The Direct Selling Exhibition & Conference will hold its first event in the Middle East, to be held from 17th to 19th May 2008 in Dubai. Direct selling also known as multi-level marketing is the sale of a consumer product or service, person-to-person, away from a fixed retail location. The exhibition aims to increase the stature and credibility of direct selling companies and associations in the region.

  • Dubai sets up events company

  • A new events management company was launched by the Dubai government to manage and organise sports and cultural events in the emirate, reported WAM. The Dubai Event Management Corporation, owned by Dubai government, will be based in the emirate, and will operate under the authority of the Dubai Ruler.

  • Jewellers hail Pearls of Arabia project

  • Prominent jewellers in Dubai believe the Pearls of Arabia project is a 'proactive step' that will raise Dubai's profile as a hub for pearls along with gold and diamond, reported Gulf News.Naheed Anees, director of ARY's fine jewellery division, said the project will give more visibility to pearls within the jewellery sector. Chetan Karani, managing director of Pearl Enterprises, said the project will bring pearls into the limelight again and it will be good for the future of the local jewellery industry.

  • Panda merges with Giant Stores

  • Saudi food group Savola has agreed to merge its Al Azizia Panda Company chain of supermarkets with Saudi Arabia's The Giant Stores Company, which is owned by the Abdul Kadir Al-Muhaidib & Sons Group, reported Reuters. Savola Chief Executive Sami Baroum said his company will own 80% of the venture and The Giant Stores the remainder. Combined, the units will have sales of about 5 billion riyals ($1.33bn) per year, Baroum said.
