Panasonic A/C increase in the Gulf
- Panasonic Marketing Middle East has announced that sales of its air-conditioners increased from between 120 per cent in Kuwait and 200 per cent in Iran, reported Gulf News. Sales in the UAE increased by 130 per cent while sales jumped 165 per cent in Oman.

Sharjah mannequins must be headless
- Sharjah Municipality has issued a circular warning Sharjah shopkeepers that mannequins should be headless and only model 'decent' clothing, reported Gulf News. The circular, which was recently sent to all shops, states that the heads of mannequins must be removed and that they are forbidden to wear underwear, to uphold the traditional and religious values of the emirate.

Mideast food service market worth $31bn
- The Middle East food service market is estimated to be worth more than $31bn a year, according to organizers of the 13th Gulfood Exhibition, which will be held at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre from February 24 to 27. Of this, the GCC states account for almost $9.5bn, with meat, poultry and fish accounting for 30% of purchases by the foodservice sectors. Ninety per cent of region's food needs are imported.

Number of malls double in Dubai
- The number of shopping malls in Dubai will double and build up a space of 40 million square metres in the coming years, the head of Dubai Shopping Malls Group (DSMG) said, reported Gulf News. DSMG head Eesa Adam said that as Dubai's retail sector continues to witness a remarkable expansion, the number of shopping centres has reached 35, covering a total space of 14 million square metres and containing more than 3,500 stores. Dubai's vibrant shopping industry is considered a major driver of the multi-billion-dollar Gulf retail market, which is the second home to more than 400 international brands.

Abu Dhabi Duty Free eyes growth
- Abu Dhabi Duty Free plans a 25% increase in turnover in 2008 above the 2007 turnover of $102.6m, reported Gulf News. ADDF's General Manager Dan Cappell said the figure could rise if annual passenger numbers increase above the forecast, which is 7.6 million passengers for 2008 at Abu Dhabi International Airport. ADDF turnover in 2007 was 36.29% higher than 2006.

Saudi sets up translation center
- Saudi Arabia has announced plans to set up an autonomous international translation center with a mandate to translate references, textbooks, international literature and scientific materials to be used by individuals as well as local and international institutions, reported Arab News. The proposed center will also help bridge the gap between Arab and Western cultures, boost the process of Arabization and also address the problems of shortage of translators and interpreters. A UN study has found that for every one million Arabs in the world, only one foreign language book is translated into Arabic each year. It further said that an estimated 250 million Arabic speakers in the world enjoy a growing number of news and entertainment media today, but this wealth of new information includes very little non-Arab literature.

Robot with emotion debuts in UAE
- Robotic toy Pleo, a dinosaur with the capability to show emotion was launched in the UAE by American company Ugobe, reported Gulf News. The hit toy in the US has 38 sensors in its body which allow Pleo to see, hear and feel. Reviewers say it could boost awareness of artificial intelligence in the region.
