SouqExtra to set up in DWC
- SouqExtra has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Dubai World Central (DWC) to explore retail development opportunities at DWC Residential City. The retail chain eyes to cater to DWC future residents to provide service as community-focused centres, with integrated primary services such as high-end grocery, kids' play area, fast food outlets, coffee shops, full-fledged gymnasium, salon, photo shop and community hall.

UAE ranks 8th in global retail
- According to a report by CB Richard Ellis, the UAE has now ranked eighth among the Top 15 Most International Retail Markets, cited Gulf News. About 41% of international retailers have been noted present in the emirate. The study identifies India as the most sought-after emerging market.

Swedish retailer takes hit after cartoon republications
- Swedish-Danish dairy giant Arla Foods said its sales in the Middle East have fallen to half of of projected levels following February's re-publication in Danish media of a set of cartoons depicting the prophet Mohammed, reported Thomson Financial. Astrid Gade Nielsen, the company's group head of communications, said Arla would face a sales decline of 1.3 billion Danish crowns, out of projected global sales of around 50 billion crowns, in 2008, if the trend continues. She added, however, that the trend might turn, and that the effect on the year's result is thus impossible to tell.

H&M to open in Egypt
- Hennes & Mauritz (H&M), the international fashion retailer, has announced plans to open its first outlet in Egypt. The store will be open on June 5 in Cairo's exclusive Stars Center mall in the new Citystars development.

Dubai Mall announces opening date
- Emaar Malls Group has announced that it is opening its flagship shopping mall development, The Dubai Mall, on August 28, 2008. One of the world's largest shopping and entertainment destinations, The Dubai Mall has a total internal floor area of 5.9 million sq ft and gross leasable space of 3.77 million sq ft, which is equivalent to the size of 50 football fields put together. The mall will feature over 1,200 stores, including two anchor department stores and 120 food & beverage outlets.

Al Futtaim buys 88% stake in Robinson
- UAE-based Al Futtaim group has acquired an 88% stake in Robinson, a Singapore-based retail chain, reported Gulf News. Al Futtaim is offering Dhs1.6bn (S$620m) for the firm and expects to complete the acquisition in a few weeks. GTN Heine, Group Director of Al Futtaim Group, said the firm plans to acquire about 95% of Robinson and eventually de-list it from the Singapore Stock Exchange.

Camel sells for $2.72m
- The crown prince of the UAE of Dubai has paid a record price $2.72m for a camel, reported AFP. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashed al-Maktoum purchased the female - which are the fastest racing camels - at a nine-day camel beauty pageant that is taking place in Abu Dhabi. More than 10,000 camels from across the Gulf are competing for prize money totalling around $9.5m.

ADIH launches $7bn Style City project
- Abu Dhabi Investment House plan has announced the launch of the $7bn Style City project that will be implemented in several countries, reported Gulf Daily News. The Style City concept will be launched in Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Morocco, Tunisia and India, as part of MOUs ADIH signed yesterday with major developments in these countries. The project seeks to attract international brand names in jewellery, furniture and luxury living from both academic and retail aspects to create style and design hubs in select emerging markets.
