Million-dollar carpet to visit Dubai
- A rare carpet hand-woven from pure silk will be showcased at the International Trade Fair for Carpets and Floor Coverings, which will take place at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre from May 25 to 27. The million-dollar piece of art named Zahra is one of the several exhibits to be showcased by the Japanese company Yazdani.

City Centre Sharjah expands space
- Sharjah City Centre is undergoing a Dhs41m redevelopment to offer new retail area of over 37,553sqm. The expansion expects completion by December 2008 to accommodate additional 22 new stores.

Dubai to offer 'Universal Museums'
- The Dubai Culture and Arts Authority has launched the ‘The Universal Museums’ project, which will bring together collections from globally-recognized museums. The project will be located in the recently-launched Khor Dubai area, stretching from Shindaga to Business Bay. The project will be showcased alongside performances spaces, artist ateliers, and galleries.

Cirque du Soleil in Palm Jumeirah
- Nakheel said that Palm Jumeirah will host Cirque du Soleil’s world famous touring show ‘Alegria’ in Spring 2009. The show will be a prelude to the permanent show due to open on the island in summer of 2011. The announcement was made at the recent Arabian Travel Market.

Ajman City Centre sales up 28%
- Ajman City Centre in the UAE welcomed over nine million visitors in 2007, an 11% increase over 2006, according to a statement. Sales at the centre touched Dhs632m ($172m), a 28% increase compared to the previous year.

UAE may impose VAT in 2009
- The UAE is likely to introduce a value added tax in early 2009 to replace the exisiting customs duty, a senior Dubai Customs official said on Tuesday. The tax rate will be between three and five%, and initially it will generate about the same amount as collected in customs. The UAE has spent two years studying the VAT, and the infrastructure to levy it will be ready by the last quarter of 2008, reported Gulf News.

IDdesign signs 4th store in Dubai
- IDdesign has signed its fourth store in Dubai, which will be situated at the Dubai Design Center. The store is set to open in December 2009, and is being considered as the anchor store with a total area of about 3500 square metres. The business will be operated by the local partner Easa Saleh Al Gurg Group.

Al Ain Zoo to get facelift
- Al Ain zoo is to receive a mutli-billion dollar facelift to be rebranded as Al Ain Wildlife Park and Resort. The destination will be spread over 900 hectares and recreate desert environments from around the world. Phase 1 will be completed by 2010, with the main zoo ready by 2011.
