LCD and plasma TV market to double
- Demand for LCD and plasma TVs in the Middle East is expected to more than double this year, according to Ashraf Sajid, head of sales and marketing, digital media business, Samsung Electronics Gulf. He said customers increasingly are seeking larger screens as demand for smaller screens becomes saturated.

ME franchise market to soar
- The Middle East's $30bn franchise industry is experiencing 'prolific' growth, as various local and foreign brands seek greater market penetration, reported Gulf News. The retail explosion in the Gulf will lure more international and local brands into the region and help the franchise market grow by 25% per annum, said Sary Hamway, chief executive of franchise consultants Franchise Excellence.

Alexandria City Centre plans expansion
- The Alexandria City Centre in Alexandria, Egypt will being a major expansion starting May 2008. The mall will almost double in size, adding 29,117 square metres of gross leasing space to take its total offering to 62,162 square metres and over 90 additional stores. The new extension will house anchor stores such as Home Centre and Centre Point, six international retailers such as H&M and Debenhams and many other well-known brands taking the total number of retailers in Alexandria City Centre to more than 190, according to a statement.

Daman launches $13.6m ME art fund
- Daman Investments, the Dubai-based broker and private equity company, has started a Dhs50m ($13.6m) fund to buy Middle Eastern art, reported Bloomberg. Prices for works by Arab and Iranian artists have been soaring, and auction houses including Christie's and Bonhams are expanding in the Middle East as oil earnings spur the region's economies and increase personal wealth.

2nd Muscat City Centre planned
- MAF Shopping Malls, a leading shopping mall developer, plans to open a second City Centre in Muscat in the city's Qurum district by October this year, according to a statement. The fit out of the Carrefour hypermarket, the single largest store occupying 12,552 square metres, has already begun. The Qurum City Centre will be the first mall of its kind in the Qurum commercial area.

Million-dollar carpet to visit Dubai
- A rare carpet hand-woven from pure silk will be showcased at the International Trade Fair for Carpets and Floor Coverings, which will take place at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre from May 25 to 27. The million-dollar piece of art named Zahra is one of the several exhibits to be showcased by the Japanese company Yazdani.

Dubai to offer 'Universal Museums'
- The Dubai Culture and Arts Authority has launched the 'The Universal Museums' project, which will bring together collections from globally-recognized museums. The project will be located in the recently-launched Khor Dubai area, stretching from Shindaga to Business Bay. The project will be showcased alongside performances spaces, artist ateliers, and galleries.
