  • Concerns rise about retail mall projects

  • As the supply of retail space and rents continue to rise in dubai, retailers are growing increasingly concerned about demand and affordability in the retail market, an industry expert said on Tuesday. No less than nine mega malls are in development in Dubai, raising fears that there won't be enough footfall to sustain all these projects, said Colliers International Middle East chief executive officer John Davis. Meanwhile, retail rents in malls, which average $1,200 per square metre, are increasing up to $1,800 per square metre in premier destinations such as Mall of the Emirates, Ibn Battuta and Bur Juman.

  • DSC to offer over 3.8m sq feet of retail space

  • Dubai Sports City said it will offer more than 3.8 million square feet of retail space across all of its facilities when construction is completed. In addition to its major retail areas – Arena Mall, North Point and South Point, and Canal Residence West – events, promotion and specialty leasing opportunities will be available within the stadia and public areas. Retail leasing for Dubai Sports City will commence in the third quarter of 2008, a statement said.

  • Consumer confidence will rebound, says mall official

  • Consumer confidence is low during this current economic cycle, but it will turn around, said Michael Kercheval, president and chief executive officer of the International Council of Shopping Centres. Speaking at the Middle East Council of Shopping Centres in Dubai, Kercheval said the retail industry can play an important role in turning around consumer confidence and not playing into the negativity, reported Gulf News.

  • Nakheel eyes 100 malls in 20 years

  • Nakheel Retail, Nakheel's latest venture into retail is aiming to build about 100 shopping malls in Dubai in 20 years, cited Gulf News. It has set up four divisions spanning shopping mall and retail brand development - Shopping Malls, RetailCorp, Hypermarkets and Food & Beverage. The company is in talks with a global retail hypermarket chain to operate supermarkets and hypermarkets, totalling 40 in the next 20 years.

  • Marvel to set up in Dubailand

  • Tatweer has signed up an agreement with US-based Marvel Entertainment to develop the world's first superheroes theme park at Dubailand, said news reports. The creators of superheroes action characters such as Spiderman, The X-Men, Iron Man, the Fantastic Four and The Incredible Hulk have initially partnered with Al Ahli group, Tatweer has now taken over to manage the theme park portfolio.

  • Agnona opens in Middle East

  • Italian luxury women's wear Agnona has opened its first boutique in the Middle East at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers Shopping Boulevard. The brand is being considered as the female counterpart of the Ermenegildo Zegna menswear. UAE Trading is the exclusive partner of Agnona in the UAE.

  • Pizza Inn to expand in Bahrain

  • Pizza Inn has announced that it has signed a multi-unit development agreement to open up to 20 new units in Bahrain over the next 10 years. The chain has awarded a territorial franchise agreement to the Attyab Al Bahrain Catering Company and Eastern Retail Services Company, both owned by the Sheikh Terki Al Khalifa Group of Companies. Initially, the group is converting its former Domino's Pizza locations to Pizza Inn restaurants in Bahrain.

  • UAE is 8th most international retail market

  • The UAE ranks number eight among the Top 15 most international retail markets, according to a Global Emerging Markets Survey of 300 retailers worldwide. The survey said 41% of international retailers have a presence in the country. The report added that tetailing in the UAE has changed beyond recognition in recent years with the emergence of some of the most high profile retail developments anywhere in the world.
