  • Al Futtaim buys 88% stake in Robinson

  • UAE-based Al Futtaim group has acquired an 88% stake in Robinson, a Singapore-based retail chain, reported Gulf News. Al Futtaim is offering Dhs1.6bn (S$620m) for the firm and expects to complete the acquisition in a few weeks. GTN Heine, Group Director of Al Futtaim Group, said the firm plans to acquire about 95% of Robinson and eventually de-list it from the Singapore Stock Exchange.

  • Camel sells for $2.72m

  • The crown prince of the UAE of Dubai has paid a record price $2.72m for a camel, reported AFP. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashed al-Maktoum purchased the female - which are the fastest racing camels - at a nine-day camel beauty pageant that is taking place in Abu Dhabi. More than 10,000 camels from across the Gulf are competing for prize money totalling around $9.5m.

  • ADIH launches $7bn Style City project

  • Abu Dhabi Investment House plan has announced the launch of the $7bn Style City project that will be implemented in several countries, reported Gulf Daily News. The Style City concept will be launched in Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Morocco, Tunisia and India, as part of MOUs ADIH signed yesterday with major developments in these countries. The project seeks to attract international brand names in jewellery, furniture and luxury living from both academic and retail aspects to create style and design hubs in select emerging markets.

  • Dubai Duty Free sales jump 31%

  • Dubai Duty Free has announced that its first quarter sales rose 31% to Dhs958m ($266m) over the same period last year. DDF is the largest travel retail operator in the Middle East, representing about 50% of the total duty free sales in the region. Perfumes, which account for 14% of sales at DDF, retained the top spot with sales of $37m in the first quarter, a 30% increase over the same period last year. Liquor and gold retained the second and third positions respectively with gold showing an impressive first quarter rise of 44%.

  • Lulu fixes price of 32 commodities

  • Lulu Hypermarket is implementing its first phase of its program to preserve 2007 prices of more than 32 basic food goods throughout 2008. In an MoU signed with UAE Ministry of Economy, Lulu will apply the fixed price to various types of rice, sugar, oil, flour, tea, butter, salt, milk and its products, tomato paste, legumes, chicken, meat, cheese, egg, macaroni, water and bread.

  • New Curry On hits Dubai

  • A new curry joint has opened in Dubai recently, offering an innovative variety of curries from many places including Malaysia, India, and Sri Lanka. The restaurant is located in La Plage Complex on Jumeirah Beach Road and is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week.

  • Books on boom

  • Books are booming in the UAE and bookstore operators claim that they have been able to recover lost ground amidst Internet, high-tech videos and computers, cited Gulf News. Magrudy's has recently expanded into a 30,000 square feet outlet in Dubai Festival City, while Borders franchisee Al Maya Group also claim positive sales shift in 2007.

  • More UAE stores may shun plastic bags

  • Plastic bags in UAE supermarkets may soon be a thing of the past, reported Khaleej Times. Some of the country's leading supermarket chains are considering an alternative to plastic bags, following a decision by the Sharjah Cooperative to use biodegradable plastic bags. The cooperative signed an agreement with the Fujairah Plastic Factory under which the stores will use plastic bags which take a maximum of four to nine months to degrade unlike the normal plastic bags which remain in earth for thousands of years.
