Fire guts souk in Dubai
- A huge fire that started early on Wednesday has gutted more than 100 shops in the Deira district of Dubai, reported Gulf News. The cluster of shops caught fire around 1:45 am due to an electrical short circuit in an air-conditioning unit, which was located next to a transformer, according to an unconfirmed witness account. The market sold textiles, ready-made garments, perfumes and toys. No injuries have been reported.

Dubai Mall set to open by late 2008
- The Dubai Mall, slated to be one of the world's largest shopping malls, is set to be open by the end of this year. The mall is being developed by Emaar as part of the Dhs73bn ($20bn) Downtown Burj Dubai project. The structural steel used in mall, which will be bigger than the Mall of Emirates, is double that deployed for the Eiffel Tower (7,300 tonnes), and the stone and tile works of 1.2 million sq ft already laid are approximately 18 times the size of a football field measuring 69,000 sq ft. The net leasable floor area will be equivalent to the size of 50 football fields put together, developers said.

Bahrain City Centre to open September 1
- The Majid Al Futtaim Group has announced that it will open Bahrain City Centre, slated to be the country's biggest shopping mall, on September 1. The mall, which will be located in Manama on Shaikh Khalifa Bin Salman Road in the Seef district, will stretch over three levels and occupy a built-up area of 150,000 square metres. Built at an investment of over 25 million Bahraini dinars, Bahrain City Centre will also have two international hotels managed by Kempinski, with 550 luxurious rooms offering four- and five-star facilities.

Value of ME toy market hits $1.5bn
- The value of the Middle East toy market is estimated at Dhs5.5bn ($1.5bn) with 11.8% annual growth, according to an executive who spoke at the Middle East Toy Fair, which kicked off yesterday in Dubai. Meanwhile, the average yearly toy expenditure has jumped to $327 per child in the Middle East, second only to North America, according to Epoc Messe Frankfurt, organizer of the conference.

Hard Rock landmark faces closure
- Hard Rock Cafe in Dubai may face closure or even demolition, reported Gulf News. Hard Rock Cafe management has confirmed that the land it occupies has been sold for the development of a 'high-rise' project. The Cafe located on Shaikh Zayed Road near Dubai Media City was established in December 1997.

DIC buys Asian spa group
- Dubai International Capital paid an undisclosed sum for a significant stake in Singapore-based True Group, which runs a chain of yoga, fitness and spa centres in South East Asia. The True Group operates 17 outlets and has 70,000 members in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Taiwan and now plans to expand to 100 outlets over the coming five years.

Interiors UAE opens today
- Interiors UAE, a brand new event for the interiors and furnishing sector, is set to open today in Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre until April 2. The event is open for both the contract and retail market. A seminar on 'Living with Art' is also being organized, as well as an interior design competition.

Corporate Mall sells 75% of space
- Fortune Group announced its high-end retail offering-the Corporate Mall, which will be located in Burj Al Alam has sold out 75% of its 313,000sq.ft retail space. The exclusive mall targets the retail demand, which is expected in Business Bay community once ready for occupancy.
