Sage Software has announced a partnership deal with Dubai-based IT distribution company ITE Distribution to distrbute Sage Software's 'Peachtree' accounting software range and 'ACT!' contact and customer management solution across the Middle East. ITE will handle all distribution activities for both products - from launches, stocking of supplies, in-store merchandise, product display, to appointment and development of resellers.

Krishna Murthy, Managing Director, Acer Computer for Middle East and Africa, has said that total personal computer shipments for the Europe, Middle East and Africa in the third quarter this year had dropped by 9.3%, Emirates Business has reported. Desktop sales had dropped 25%, while notebook sales grew by more than 10% and a major part came from netbooks, he said. The decline in sales had resulted in nearly 20% to 30% drop in revenues for PC makers in the Middle East and Africa region, he noted.

Shareholders of Singapore's Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing have approved an offer by Abu Dhabi to buy the world's third-biggest maker of customized chips for S$2.5bn ($1.8bn), the chairman of the Singaporean company said today. Advanced Technology Investment Co., an investment company owned by Abu Dhabi, will pay S$2.68 ($1.86) a share in cash for Chartered Semiconductor, ATIC said in September. Abu Dhabi plans to combine the maker of chips used in Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 game console with Globalfoundries, a venture ATIC created with Advanced Micro Devices last year, to create a challenger to United Microelectronics, the world's second-biggest maker of customized chips, according to Bloomberg.

The head of Abu Dhabi-controlled microchip maker Globalfoundries has resigned following media reports linking him to an insider-trading scandal, the National has reported. Hector Ruiz previously led the chip maker AMD, which spun off its manufacturing assets to create Globalfoundries this year. Ruiz's resignation is effective from January 4 but he will take leave of absence immediately, the company said in a statement.

Bahrain has announced a new initiative to increase the amount of Arabic online content, Gulf Daily News has reported. Bahrain's eGovernment Authority and the United Nations Development Programme are joining hands to create the Centre for eContent Development, which will be headquartered in Bahrain and 'increase significantly' Arabic content in websites from the present one percent.

Network solutions provider D-Link Middle East has released the D-ViewCam Add-in for Microsoft Windows Home Server, a software application that, when paired with a home server, lets users quickly and easily manage and access D-Link's home security cameras from any computer with a web browser, the company said in a statement. Windows Home Server offers automatic backup, system restore, and enhanced data protection, remote access, centralized storage and sharing of files, the ability to increase storage capacity and more. With the D-ViewCam Add-in installed on Windows Home Server, video and motion monitoring are recorded from D-Link security cameras directly to the server. Users can configure the recording schedules and access recorded or streaming video from the home server using a web browser.

McAfee has signed a deal with HP to provide an 18-month subscription to McAfee Total Protection Service on HP desktop and notebook PCs in the Middle East. Aimed at small businesses and available from HP Preferred Partners, cover includes anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall and basic email virus protection service, centrally managed by McAfee. "Smaller businesses today are under constant attack from an ever-growing list of security threats, including new forms of malware, spam and data loss," said David Quantrell, EMEA President, McAfee. Etisalat has launched the HSPA-WiFi Modem, a mobile broadband service that lets customers simultaneously connect up to five Wi-Fi-enabled products using one SIM card. Operating over the telcos 3.5G network, the Dhs749 Pocket HSPA-Wi-Fi modem supports a maximum downlink speed of up to 7.2 Mbps, and a maximum uplink speed of up to 5.76 Mbps. The service is available via subscription to one of Etisalat's current data packages.

In a study made by Frost & Sullivan study, the Middle East and South Asia market for third party data centre services stands at $230.2m. The report suggested the UAE market is set to witness most of third-party data centre participants expanding their data centres almost double in the next few years, while managed services space is expected to grow at 25.7%. Sony has announced a voluntary recall of certain power adapters and docking stations for its Vaio range of laptops. The decision was made after the company received four reports of customers receiving electric shocks from faulty adapters. Models of affected AC adaptors have been identified as VGP-AC19V17 and VGP-AC19V18, and VGP-PRFE1 for the docking stations.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) will meet this week in the Korean capital, Seoul to discuss the addition of non-Latin characters to its list of available domains, PC Magazine has reported. If the move goes through, the organization will likely begin rolling out domains in languages such as Arabic and other non-Latin languages in the middle of next year. 'This is the biggest change technically to the internet since it was invented 40 years ago,' ICANN chairman Peter Dengate Thrush said.
