AMD to boost regional staff size

Advanced Micro Devices has said it is increasing its workforce in the region by 50% as it expects 'wonderful' growth in 2009 despite the recession and a sales slump in the PC sector, Emirates Business has reported. The supplier of microprocessors is bolstering its sales and marketing plans in the Middle East and is looking at a significantly larger market share by the end of this year, according to Dr. Gaith Kadir, AMD's General Manager for Middle East, North Africa and Turkey.

Asbis to be Lenovo's Saudi distribution partner

New Apple OS due for Middle East

Apple Mac operating system X v10.6 Snow Leopard will go on sale in the Middle East during the first week of September. Apple said the OS includes 'hundreds' of refinements, new core technologies and out of the box support for Microsoft Exchange. Additionally, system applications such as Finder, Mail, iCal, iChat and Safari are 64-bit. It will be available from Arab Business Machine's Authorised Premium Resellers, Authorised Resellers and Authorised Retailers. It costs from $38 as an upgrade from OS X to $299.

Aptus Infotech signs deal with 3M

Aptus Infotech in Oman has been appointed as a distributor for 3M Gulf, providing networking and structured cabling in the Sultanate. It will include optimising network testing, construction, locating and maintenance for faster, more reliable high-bandwidth transmissions to telecommunications service providers. It will also cover fibre to the premises and DSL deployments from central office to a customer's location, enabling customers to better use the existing infrastructure or install new networks.

Sun reports $147m loss

Sun Microsystems Inc. has reported a $147m loss, or 20 cents per share, in the three months ending June 30, which is Sun's fiscal fourth quarter, AP has reported. Sun has made a profit of $88m in the year-ago period. Oracle Corp. is set to takeover Sun in a $7.4bn deal,scheduled to be completed after approval from European antitrust regulators.

Bahrain to boost internet services

Sheikh Ahmad bin Attiya Allah Al-Khalifa, Bahrain's Minister for Cabinet Affairs and the Communication sector, has said the kingdom plans to enhance its internet services by expanding and developing its services on a much wider scale. In particular, it will focus on the use of broadband and mobile services, providing them at affordable prices. The kingdom hopes the move will boost available services to develop the country's communication sector, and attract technology companies into the country.

Autodesk appoints Omnix as Saudi distributor

Jessica Biel can be dangerous for your PC

Searches on Jessica Biel are more likely to land on a site that has tested positive for online threats than any other celebrity, according to software security developer McAfee. Combinations of her name, such as 'Jessica Biel downloads' or 'Jessica Biel screen savers' have a one in five chance of returning a site that contains spyware, adware, spam, phishing, viruses and other malware, it said. Beyoncé was found to be the second most dangerous name to search for, as cybercriminals try to draw in surfers using offers of stories, screen savers or ringtones, which then provide links to free downloads containing malware.

LinkdotNet users get full Windows Live access

Egypt-based LinkdotNet and Microsoft have signed an agreement to give LinkdotNet users full access to Windows Live's online services at no extra cost. Windows Live services include Hotmail and MSN Messenger, online file storage facilities, a blog and personal webpage, photo and video editing programs, online parental controls and a Windows Live toolbar to add to the user's browser.

Nokia to ship PC netbook

Mobile phone giant Nokia plans to release an Intel- and Microsoft-based PC netbook, tapping into the fast growing market. The Nokia Booklet 3G will use Microsoft's upcoming Windows 7 OS and Intel's Atom processor to offer up to 12 hours of battery life, with a weight of 1.25 kilograms. Detailed specifications, market availability and pricing will be announced in early September Nokia said. Low-cost, low-powered netbooks are the fastest growing segment of the consumer PC industry.

HP denies Injazat sale rumours

Francesco Serafini, Hewlett-Packard's Managing Director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, has denied reports that it is planning to sell Injazat Data Systems, the UAE's largest technology outsourcer, the National has reported. Injazat Data Systems remains an important joint venture for HP, he said. Injazat was established as a joint venture between HP-owned US consultancy EDS and Mubadala Development, an investment arm of the Abu Dhabi Government.

Netgear launches SMB ReadyNas 3200

Networking and storage company Netgear has launched ReadyNAS 3200, a 12-bay high-density network storage system for small and medium businesses (SMB) in the UAE. It supports up to 24TB of capacity and features include redundant power supplies and dual Gigabit Ethernet ports and is aimed at companies wanting online server consolidation or backup. "The demands of today's business often drives SMBs to adopt enterprise-scale solutions, although they lack the resources required to support the complexity of such enterprise-grade storage systems," said Ahmad Zeidan, Channel Sales Manager, Netgear Middle East.

Intel buys two software firms

US-based chipmaker Intel has bought two software companies in the last month, Cilk and Rapidmind, to boost development of applications that take better advantage of its multi-core processors. Both are small companies that employ under than 50 people, Intel said.
