Siemens Mobile registered 100 per cent regional sales growth in 2002 compared to 2001 even as the Middle East mobile phone market sustained 40 per cent growth. On a global scale, Siemens Mobile sold 4.6 million units more in 2002 than in the previous year. According to Siemens Mobiles, it is the second largest brand in the Middle East market for mobile phones.

Bahrain's new Telecommunications Authority is set to invite foreign and local companies to apply for the country's second mobile phone license. The new licensee will compete with the monopoly Bahrain Telecommunications Company (Batelco). The authority intends to award a second, 15-year mobile license in the second quarter of 2003.
Saudi-based electronic travel provider, Al Alamiah Internet, is to launch a new booking engine next year for local Haj pilgrims. Pilgrims can book their trips before the upcoming Haj season on the new site before the upcoming Haj season. The existing Bab Al Umra Visa engine will also be upgraded.

HP has launched a new line of low-priced personal workstations in the region. The Intel Pentium 4 and Intel Xeon processor-based HP workstations support Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP Professional as well as Linux operating systems.HP also announced four new monitors, including a 20-inch professional flat panel monitor.

Level five women e-commerce students organized an exhibition at the college on December 22 which included a panel discussion and a web design competition for an online college shop. Eight groups of e-commerce and business information technology students participated in a competition to have one of their web sites selected and launched on the day of the event.

Jordan's MobileCom has awarded Ericsson a USD39m contract for an extensive upgrade of its GSM network. The upgraded system will cover one million customers and offer access to the GSM network from 99.5 per cent of the country. MobileCom is part of Jordan Telecom.
Kuwait's ministry of information has raided four companies in the finance and industry sectors where 161 PCs were found with unlicensed software. Over the past month the ministry has called on all sectors to legalise their applications so as not to face the legal fall out caused by software copyright violations.
Dubai's Palm Island real estate development company has set up a call centre to handle the many enquiries it receives from home and abroad. The bi-lingual call centre will be operated by Cupola and linked to a CRM programme.

An electronic trading platform for the nations of the Organisation of Islamic Conference will be launched today in Sharjah. But only the UAE, Malaysia and Indonesia are included in phase one. Saudi Arabia will be added next year. Malaysian ISP Mimos Berhad and the Islamic Development Bank are the main shareholders in OIC networks, and a partner from the UAE should be announced next year, according to Gulf News.

This month Mercator signed up Olympic Airways, while other big customers include Singapore Airlines, Varig and Qantas.
