Arabsat confirms two launches

Arab Satellite Communications Organisation has confirmed plans to launch additional satellites in 2005 and 2006. The Arabsat board met in Dubai yesterday. Officials said the USD305m in contracts would go to European countries with a US and Russian firm handling one launch each.

MTC Vodafone, Turnkey partner

MTC-Vodafone has appointed Integrated Turnkey Systems as its solutions partner for its new services in Bahrain. ITS will support current GSM solutions and the launch of 3G services in early 2004. Under its licence conditions MTC-Vodafone must deliver 95 per cent geographic coverage.

Sheraton win, HP, Cisco

Sheraton Dubai Creek has replaced its existing business machines with HP and Cisco switches to improve its IT infrastructure for guests and staff at the hotel. Local IT partner Emitac implemented the solution.

Oman, second mobile licence

Oman's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority is preparing to issue a licence for a second private mobile phone operator by Q2 next year. PriceWaterhouseCoopers has been appointed to evaluate applications and assure transparency. Expressions of interest will be invited in a few weeks.

LG dismisses Pantech threat

New regional LG President K.H. Kim told AME Info that the recent arrival of fellow Korean mobile phone producer Pantech in the market was not a threat. He said Pantech did not enjoy the same economies of scale as LG which will produce 50m handsets in 2004 compared with Pantech's 5m.

New LG regional President

Mr K.H. Kim is the new President of LG Middle East and Africa region, replacing Mr M.B. Shin who returns to Korea. Mr Kim has 15 years of experience in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. He promised to maintain the 30% year-on-year sales target established by his predecessor.

Etihad, Lufthansa, IT tie-up

The new UAE national carrier Etihad has adopted the Lufthansa Systems' MultiHost IT package to automate its ticketing, flight data, load and inventory processes. The IT tie-up is a five-year tie-up. Abu Dhabi based Etihad Airways is poised to expand its regional network this year.

Fujairah software pirates raided

The UAE Ministry of Information and Fujairah Police conducted a raid against a company using pirated software. This first-ever raid in the emirate of Fujairah led to the seizure of 93 PCs uploaded with 185 copies of pirated software and programmes.

Canon fires on digital future

Canon Middle East has enjoyed exceptional 30 per cent year-on-year growth in 2004, announced President Gordon Jones. He told Gulf News digital solutions such as cameras had compensated for a fall in the office automation market. For 2004 he said Canon hoped to build on this momentum.

Pantech mobiles, UAE debut

Korean manufacturer Pantech has unveiled two mobile phones in its UAE market debut. The G500 is a high-resolution camera phone, and the G300 is claimed to be the world's smallest GPRS phone. The new brand signals an escalation of competition in the market and lower prices to come.

UAE 3G contract for Huawei

Chinese firm Huawei has won the USD16m network contract for the Etisalat 3G network. Etisalat plans to roll out a second pahse of 3G in the third or fourth quarter of 2004 after launching its network yesterday. The UAE is the first country in the region to launch 3G mobile phones.

Jordan's Mutah adopts Oracle

Oracle announced that Jordan's Mutah University has selected the Oracle Collaboration Suite. This includes integrated e-mail, fax, calendaring, and file sharing and management capabilities. It should decrease downtime and reduce the total cost of technology ownership.

3G launched in the UAE

Etisalat has launched its third generation mobile network in the UAE. Communications Minister Ahmed Humaid Al Tayer said the UAE now joins just a few countries which have successfully introduced 3G. It offers a greater multimedia service, video telephony, higher data speeds, and increased capacity for voice and data.
