Iraq wireless demand shoots up

Taiwan-based Senao officials said demand for wireless solutions is on a sharp upswing in Iraq against a weak or non-existent terrestrial telecom infrastructure. Senao has installed a number of its host spot wireless connectivity solutions, HS Plus, in Baghdad and Mosul, facilitating seamless Internet and telecom access from these locations.

Panasonic crosses sales milestone

Panasonic has crossed the USD1.1bn mark in Mideast sales this fiscal, a 10 per cent rise. By the end of next three years, it intends to achieve a 50 per cent increase in business volume in the region, with plans to focus on merchandising and aggressive marketing to push sales even higher, officials said. It is aggressively marketing at Gitex.

Thuraya looks to cover Americas

Thuraya may launch its third satellite in coming years to cover the Americas. Company chairman Mohammed Omran said Thuraya was in talks with potential partners in North and South America. With two satellites, it covers more than 100 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa. It recently opened an office in Iraq.

EIM sets up hot spots across UAE

EIM has implemented a wireless infrastructure throughout the UAE which will allow users to connect to Internet at broadband speeds from select public locations. Users will be charged USD2.7 for the first time they log on and then additional USD2.7 for every 250kb of data downloaded.

HP highlights Saudi progress

Hewlett-Packard executives highlighted progress in Saudi Arabia at a Gitex press conference in Dubai today. They noted that approvals for a new PC plant took just two weeks, and that demand for IT in the education sector was surging. HP expects the Kingdom to be its fastest growing market in the region which is its fastest growing IT market globally.

Dell enters printer market

US computer giant Dell is entering the printer market for the first time with an extensive range of competitively priced printers. Customers will also be able to recycle print cartridges by mail to save on ink costs which comprise most of the cost of running a printer.

Inmarsat gets full access to Iraq

Inmarsat has received permission to provide and sell its full portfolio of mobile satellite services in Iraq. Company officials said some services have been in use in Iraq since after the war, mainly by aid agencies, Internet cafes, media and reconstruction agencies.

HP attempts record at Gitex

HP has found a novel way to market itself - and may create a world record in the process. Surrounded by 773 other exhibitors at Gitex, HP plans to stand out by printing in one day the world's largest pack of playing cards (108.1x70.7 cm) on a HP Designjet 5500 60. The pack will feature Burj Al Arab on one of its faces.

Lebanon IT sector growth at 10pc

Lebanese IT industry is estimated at more than USD165m. This includes related services such as consultancy, training, implementation, imports and exports. It is growing annually by 10 per cent, said Lebanese officials at Gitex. Lebanon seeks to attract major IT firms.

Region's largest IT event opens

On the back of the opening of the week-long Computer Shopper at Airport Expo Dubai on October 18, Gitex opens on Sunday at the DWTC complex. Some 775 exhibitors are participating in Gitex while the Computer Shopper features 122 participants. Gitex will run on until October 23.

HSBC signs up with Tejari

Mideast e-marketplace Tejari has signed up HSBC as a member, which will now source a significant amount of its procurement from Tejari community. HSBC hopes to reduce costs through volume purchases and reduced administrative costs. It plans to buy items like office equipment, IT solutions and stationery.
