Madar Research wll launch the Dubai Knowledge Economy 2003-08 Research Book at Gitex 2003. The Dubai firm provides ICT-related market information and consultation services, specialising in B2B market research, analysis and forecast.
Smart card unit supplies first lot
Smart card manufacturer Ebtikar, has delivered its first lot to UAE Ministry of Finance and Industry. Under a August-signed contract, the Etisalat arm will supply 3.6m e-dirham smart cards with 60,000 supplied every two months. The cards are used for transactions at all UAE ministries and some local departments.
Thuraya expands cover to East Asia
UAE-based Thuraya will soon introduce its satellite telecom service in East and Southeast Asia, stretching its coverage to nearly half of the globe. New countries to be added to Thuraya coverage include China, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Cambodia, Vietnam, Japan, Laos, Koreas, Singapore, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Brunei, Mongolia and parts of Russian federation.
CompuMe splits business focus
CompuMe will focus on two key areas by setting up independent divisions for retail and corporate business solutions. This move has been necessitated by the exponential growth of CompuMe in markets such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. CompuMe has five mega stores and two Express stores in the Middle East in Dubai, Riyadh, Jeddah, Al Khobar and Cairo.
Two month free web hosting by EIM
EIM has announced a two-month free web hosting for companies or individuals who apply between now and 12 November 2003. All applicants will receive free registration to the .ae domain for one year. A major draw is the tax breaks that can be received as companies hosting web sites in the EU or US are subject to pay VAT tax of between 15-25 per cent. The number of customers hosting with EIM has risen from 5,000 to over 6,500.
Tejari, Maximo user conference
Tejari, the Dubai based e-marketplace, will be showcased at the Maximo User Group Conference to held in Dubai October 15-16. CEO Sheikha Lubna will speak on increased procurement effeciency through online marketplace connectivity. The experience of the Dubai Ports Authority and the leveraging of MRO Software for integration with Tejari will also be highlighted.
Intel club formed in Ramallah
Intel, the International Youth Foundation (IYF) and Palestinian non-profit Welfare Association, have launched Intel Computer Clubhouse in Ramallah. It is an after-school programme for 10-18 year olds, giving them access to high-tech equipment, professional software and adult mentors to help them develop self-confidence and enthusiasm for learning.
Computer Shopper from Oct 18
The week-long Computer Shopper, the retail arm of Gitex, will open at Airport Expo Dubai from October 18. It will offer all sector-related retail products ranging from all types of hardware to various kinds of software including educational, at promotional prices and discounts.
Web masters conference
The Datamatix Web Master Conference and the Middle East Website Awards will be held on October 19 at the Dubai World Trade Centre. The event is exclusively for webmasters and other professionals associated with web technology and will coincide wth Gitex, which will be held at the same venue.
DubaiTrade.ae portal launched
Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corp of Dubai (PCFC) has launched DubaiTrade.ae portal that combines all services of Dubai Ports Authority, Dubai Customs and Jebel Ali Free Zone into a single consolidated system. It will facilitate electronic services to the trade, maritime and transportation industry.
Voice mail system being enhanced
GSM, Al Wasel and land line voice mail users in Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah will have to dial 123 to reactivate their mail boxes and set-up after October 14 following a migration of the service to an enhanced system. It will offer additional features and functionalities like new menu prompts and expanded mail capacity, Etisalat said.
400,000 use EIM Mail Service
The number of EIM Mail Service subscribers in the UAE has risen to 400,000 from 300,000 in January due to a rise in users and an increased range of e-mail services. The service has become the dominant form of communication online, with many businesses now using it as their primary communication tool.
Etisalat to demonstrate 3G at Gitex
3G technology will perhaps for the first time be demonstrated to the public at large, during Gitex by Etisalat. The UAE telecom provider has taken a 700 sqm stand to accommodate the wide variety of products and services it offers. Etisalat will use the show to unviel Hayati, its mobile communications portal of the future.
PlayStation Experience website
Sony Gulf has launched a bilingual website (www.pse-dubai.com) to create awareness about one of the largest gaming expositions in the region, PlayStation Experience, that will be held from October 18-24 at Gitex Computer Shopper. It is the first time the event is being held in the region. Sony Gulf expects 50,000 visitors.
Bahrain to have e-ministry
Microsoft will assist the Bahraini Ministry of Commerce build a model e-Ministry that will integrate various data sources and automate manual processing. Commerce Minister Al Saleh Al Saleh signed an MoU with Microsoft Emea CEO JP Courtois. Microsoft has opened an office in Bahrain.
