Smart card manufacturer Ebtikar, has delivered its first lot to UAE Ministry of Finance and Industry. Under a August-signed contract, the Etisalat arm will supply 3.6m e-dirham smart cards with 60,000 supplied every two months. The cards are used for transactions at all UAE ministries and some local departments.

UAE-based Thuraya will soon introduce its satellite telecom service in East and Southeast Asia, stretching its coverage to nearly half of the globe. New countries to be added to Thuraya coverage include China, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Cambodia, Vietnam, Japan, Laos, Koreas, Singapore, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Brunei, Mongolia and parts of Russian federation.

EIM has announced a two-month free web hosting for companies or individuals who apply between now and 12 November 2003. All applicants will receive free registration to the .ae domain for one year. A major draw is the tax breaks that can be received as companies hosting web sites in the EU or US are subject to pay VAT tax of between 15-25 per cent. The number of customers hosting with EIM has risen from 5,000 to over 6,500.

GSM, Al Wasel and land line voice mail users in Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah will have to dial 123 to reactivate their mail boxes and set-up after October 14 following a migration of the service to an enhanced system. It will offer additional features and functionalities like new menu prompts and expanded mail capacity, Etisalat said.

The UAE telecom provider has taken a 700 sqm stand to accommodate the wide variety of products and services it offers. Etisalat will use the show to unviel Hayati, its mobile communications portal of the future.

Sony Gulf has launched a bilingual website (www.pse-dubai.com) to create awareness about one of the largest gaming expositions in the region, PlayStation Experience, that will be held from October 18-24 at Gitex Computer Shopper. It is the first time the event is being held in the region. Sony Gulf expects 50,000 visitors.

Microsoft will assist the Bahraini Ministry of Commerce build a model e-Ministry that will integrate various data sources and automate manual processing. Commerce Minister Al Saleh Al Saleh signed an MoU with Microsoft Emea CEO JP Courtois. Microsoft has opened an office in Bahrain.
