Hyderabad to participate in Gitex

The IT hub of India, Hyderabad, has confirmed its participation at this year's Gitex and aims to use the Dubai event as a platform to reach out to global IT majors. Meanwhile, New Zealand will be represented for the first time at Gitex by Cable Ways, marking the growing global reach of the regional IT exhibition.

GQB replaces core banking system

Grindlays Qatar Bank (GQB) has successfully implemented a new core banking system, Equation from Misys Retail Banking, at its Doha operation. The complete core system replacement project was completed from scratch in less than eight months and is already delivering real business value, the bank said.

Batelco cuts overseas call rates

Batelco has slashed international call rates by as much as 21 per cent for fixed lines. Peak time calls to GCC are 10 per cent less, to other Arab countries by 15 per cent, to North America, Europe, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa by 12 per cent, to India and Pakistan by 8.5 per cent and to the Philippines by over 10 per cent. This is the second cut this year.

Egypt stake in mobile operator

State-owned Telecom Egypt has agreed to buy a stake on Vodafone Egypt, according to news reports. The government had said it was undecided whether to allow a third mobile operator to vie with MobiNil and Vodafone or to take a stake in one of the two. Such reports lifted telecom shares.

Iraq to name mobile phone firms

Iraq will announce on Monday the names of companies that will build the first mobile telephone network. The choice will be between US technology or the European GSM system more widely used in the Mideast. The licences as seen as among the most lucrative non-oil contracts to come out of post-war Iraq.

Gitex online registrations up

Organisers DWTC claim that response to this year's Gitex has exceeded all expectations as is indicated by 11,673 registrations by trade visitors in just one month since the facility opened. Gitex will be held at the DWTC complex from October 19-23.

Iraq IT sector gets Xerox distributor

Iraq's IT market seems to be getting back on its feet with majors such as Xerox returning to the market. Xerox has appointed Jummar Trading as its distributor in Iraq. The distributor will operate from Baghdad with regional offices in Basra, Kirkuk and Mosul. In one-year it aims to employ 100 staff.

Intel wireless zone at Gitex

Intel will offer all at Gitex to experience Centrino mobile technology at the Intel Mobility Experience Zone. Wireless infrastructure will be provided by EIM. The zone will be supplied with an extra three access points to ensure a fully integrated wireless environment. HP will provide 40 of its latest notebooks.

Etisalat arm in three contracts

Etisalat's Emirates Data Clearing House has signed contracts with MTC Vodafone and Watania Telecom in Kuwait, and with MTC Vodafone in Bahrain, under which EDCH will provide a single point of support in data and financial clearing for partners to facilitate their roaming services. More such pacts with Asian and African operators are in the pipeline.

Morocco to debut at Gitex

Gitex reach has expanded its reach to the Atlantic shores of Northern Africa, with Morocco now deciding to make its debut in Mideast's best known IT show. The North African country has taken a 30sqm stand. Gitex retail arm, Computer Shopper, will take place from October 18-24 at Dubai Airport Expo.

Personalised numbers from Etisalat

Etisalat will launch its latest e-business innovation, ePayment, and a retail customer service, Wasle4me at Gitex. Under the latter, subscribers can select from 60,000 mobile numbers, which will be available for purchase. The service will include a Wasel4me GSM cards doorstep delivery.
