Injazat, USD5m Omnix deal

Injazat Technology Fund has partnered with Omnix International to further strengthen Omnix's new digital media solutions venture, Omnix Media Networks. Injazat has invested USD5m for a 31 per cent shareholding in Dubai based OMN which will focus on providing turnkey IT and audiovisual solutions for hospitality, government and enterprise businesses in the Middle East.

Mideast PC sales rocket in Q3

PC shipments in the Arab Middle East reached 380,438 units in Q3, up 24.5 per cent from the same period last year, according to IDC. Desktops, laptops and PC Servers grew at 13.8 per cent, 95.8 per cent and 27.8 per cent respectively. Most of the growth came from the PC server segment up almost 66.6 per cent.

UAE doctors, online licences

The UAE Ministry of Health has announced that doctors and medical staff in the private sector can now apply for or renew their licences online thanks to the completion of its new website, www.moh.gov.ae. All new users get a password and user name for online services.

Siemens, USD49m Iraq mobiles

Siemens Mobile has won a USD49m contract to provide equipment to mobile operator Asia-Cell to expand its GSM network in northern Iraq. This includes the enhancement of infrastructure with new installations and the introduction of a GPRS system.

DDB web monitoring complete

Pacific Control Systems has successfully completed a project to install web-enabled remote monitoring in 125 buildings for the Dubai Development Board. The whole operation was finished in just 120 days and now the 125 buildings can be surveyed over the Internet.

Huwawei, Etisalat wireless partner

Huawei Technologies has been selected as the new wireless partner for Etisalat. It will supply a complete UMTS network with the commercial launch of the network expected in Q1 next year. The deal also includes engineering services and network planning.

Sharjah gets broadband access

Etisalat is to extend its Al Shamil broadband Internet service to residential areas of Sharjah through cable systems. Director General of EIM Marouia Naeem said that Etisalat was making constant efforts to introduce broadband technology to all areas of the UAE.

Pantech mobiles enter Mideast

Korea's third largest mobile phone maker Pantech is entering the Middle East with the Al Yousef Group as its local partner in the UAE. Pantech is one of the world's top 10 mobile manufacturers with USD546m in sales and has set up its regional base in Dubai.

The Abu Dhabi authorities recently raided the offices of a construction company and seized 11 computers loaded with pirated software. Officials said the raid reflected the strong action that will be taken against software violators in the UAE, and urged users to go legal.

E-Vision plugs in Orbit channels

Etisalat cable TV service E-Vision has added the 23 Orbit channels to boast the largest number of channels of any UAE provider with 180 TV stations. The Orbit channels will be available to exisiting E-Vision subscribers through a special direct entry package.

RAK sets e-government target

The Government of Ras Al Khaimah has set December 31, 2004 as a target for implementing e-government services. Crown Prince Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi has issued a circular to all departments stressing the deadline and instructing departments to stick to it.

STC invites GSM bids

Saudi Telecoms has officially invited mobile phone companies to operate GSM networks in the Kingdom. Companies need to prequalify by the end of this month for networks to be operational by Q4 2004. Visit, www.citc.gov.sa for details. This appears to end the STC mobile monopoly.

Tejari confirms platform shift

Dubai Government owned electronic marketplace Tejari.com has confirmed that its entire platform has now moved from the US to Dubai, although it has a disaster recovery site in the US. On average 50 transactions a day take place on Tejari.com worth USD25-50,000 a time.
