Shuaa Capital, ISI tie-up

The UAE's Shuaa Capital has announced its collaboration with ISI Emerging Markets for distribution on ISI's flagship Emerging Market Information Service. Shuaa Capital data includes hundreds of financial statements, company profiles, and corporate actions for listed companies in 12 regional markets.

Inmarsat, Email in the sky

Inmarsat is displaying its Swift64 system which allows inflight email access for passengers at the Dubai Airshow this week. Emirates, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic and Lufthansa already have email access on board. Swift64 provides global broadband access and will be supported by Inmarsat satellites.

Plasma screen prices down

Plasma screen TVs are the latest home technology craze with prices now substantially down. The price of a basic Sony 42-inch PDP is down from USD7,000 a year ago to USD4,350 in Dubai. Panasonic promise new models in 2004 with even lower prices.

Jordan, UK, USD69.5m IT link

The UK's Export Credits Guarantee Department has sold USD69.5m of Jordanian debt to a local company to establish an IT link within Jordan. The move is to support the development of the local IT sector as well as helping Jordan to reduce its debt burden, said officials.

Sun to move regional HQ to DIC

Sun Microsystems is to move its regional headquarters to the Dubai Internet City early next year. A 100-strong team will support two offices in Saudi Arabia and one in Egypt. Sun is the latest IT multinational to choose the DIC as the location for its regional base.

NetAdvantage, the first online media house in the region, was launched this week and aims to open up online advertising in the Arab World. A subsidiary of National Technology Group of Riyadh, NetAdvantage is a one-stop shop for net advertisers. The Arab Net has tripled from 4m users in 2001 to 12m today.

KNMT wins Algeria GSM licence

Kuwaiti National Mobiles Telecommunications has won the right to operate Algeria's third cellular phone licence after placing the highest bid of USD421m, reported Reuters. Other bidders were Spain's Telefonica Moviles and South Africa's MTN. There are around 1.3m mobile phone users in Algeria but growth is rapid and telecoms authorities expect 6 million subscribers by 2005.

Nokia, new service centre

Nokia has opened its first service centre in the Middle East in Dubai with partners Al Bannai Group. The 25,000 sqft centre near Dubai International Airport has more than 100 staff and will handle high-end servicing for unspecified new products.
