HP tackles counterfeiting and fraud

Hewlett-Packard has announced an anti-counterfeiting programme to trace, track and ultimately beat counterfeiters in the printing supplies business. HP is offering special reporting channels for victims of counterfeit HP Laset Jet cartridges. In the UAE HP has launched a hotline and email address to report incidents.

Web outsourcing grows in UAE

Companies are increasingly choosing to outsource their web hosting requirements, EIM official Abdulla Hashim told a seminar in Abu Dhabi. He noted that these days a poorly hosted web presence will almost certainly result in lost customers and revenue. The UAE has close to 1m Internet users and 45 per cent of businesses are online, he noted.

MyDSF.com, global showcase

MyDSF.com, the official website of the Dubai Shopping Festival, is seeing visitor numbers surge as the annual event approaches on January 15. Organisers said 36 per cent of visitors were from the Middle East, 21 per cent from North America, 20 per cent from Europe, and 15 per cent from Asia. GCC Net users grow ten-fold

Research from Madar Research Group shows that GCC Internet users have rocketed from 330,000 in 1998 to more than three million today. Fujitsu Siemens vice president Dirk de Waegenire said the Net was a driving force behind expanding PC and laptop sales. But with 9.2 per cent PC penetration the GCC has a long way to go to match the USA at 62 per cent, he added.

DIB launches Arabic SMS service

Dubai Islamic Bank has launched the UAE's first Arabic SMS messaging service. It provides account information anywhere at anytime on a client's mobile phone. The SMS service operates at two levels with regular updates and an enquiry service.

UAE government site, 4m hits

The UAE ministry of culture and information's website, www.uaeinteract.com recorded four million hits in December, its highest-ever level, reported Wam. This equated to 595,855 page views, with over 40 per cent from the United States. The website includes thousands of pages of information about the UAE.

Oman telecom price cuts

Oman has sharply cut tariffs on international calls to speed up a drive to partially privatise its state-run telecommunications firm, a company official told Reuters that all tariffs would be reduced by between 15 and 31 per cent, with twin objectives of attracting foreign investors for the privatisation of the company and to reward customer loyalty. The government says it will retain a 51 per cent stake in the firm, 40 per cent will be reserved for foreign companies and the rest for local investors.
