Oracle powers Dubai Police portal
Dubai Police has selected the Oracle technology platform to power its e-services portal, which delivers services to Dubai's more than 900,000 residents. Online services provided through the Oracle-based portal include reporting of stolen cars and other crimes, traffic-related services such as renewal of vehicle registration and driver's licenses, payment of fines, registering of complaints and other public service initiatives, and real-time news on traffic and safety initiatives.
Etisalat wins Qatar cable job
Etisalat subsidiary e-marine has won a turnkey contract to install a new submarine fibre optic telecommunications link between Qatar and the UAE. The nine-month contract involves more than 200km of cabling under the sea.
Mideast wireless future seen
Sales of wireless local area network equipment have soared by 130 per cent in the past year, according to retailer Senora Trading. Managing director Tony Chou forecasts a 200 per cent growth in wireless connectivity solutions in the Middle East over the next three years.
Damas takes Microsoft solution
Microsoft Business Solutions and local UAE partner Landsteiner is set to supply a full system for Damas, the leading Dubai jewellery chain. Damas selected MBS after an in-depth evaluation process conducted by KPMG which looked at 10 potential solution providers.
Tecom sets up content watchdog
The Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone has set up a five-man independent advisory panel to rule on the appropriateness of content produced in the zone. It will advise companies on the suitability of proposed content, if asked, and also consider content suitability on behalf of the Tecom authority.
Philips Electronics, Ramadan deals
UAE Philips Electronics distributor Al Ghandi is promoting a sight and sound celebration for Ramadan with some outstanding offers. A 42-inch plasma TV with E-Box receiver now costs Dhs19,999, while a DVD digital home theatre is just Dhs999 and LCD flat screen TV monitor Dhs2,999.
Dubai eGovernment live on Oracle
Oracle has announced that Dubai Government has successfully completed the implementation of the Oracle E-Business Suite for Dubai Civil Aviation, Dubai Economic Department and The Ruler's Court. This comes as part of a government-wide Government Resource Planning which represents a key component of the eGovernment Initiative announced by Dubai Crown Prince General Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Iraq, CPA telecoms contract
InterNetwork Experts, a wholly-owned subsidiary of I-Sector Corporation, has won a contract with Spacelink International, for IP telephony communications infrastructure for the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq. The contract is for the three Office of CPA facilities in Basra, Mosul and Al Hillah.
Oman upgrades the Internet
Omantel has pledged significant new investment in the Internet to boost services. The Sultanate's only ISP has 120,000 users and 70,000 registered subscribers. Officials told Gulf News that enhanced capacity would raise the number that can log on simultaneously from 3,500 to 12,000.
Win back cost of LG plasma TV
LG Electronics is holding a raffle in the UAE over the next 45 days for buyers of its superb 50-inch plasma TVs. The winner will be reimbursed for the full cost of their TV. Meanwhile, every buyer will also get a free DAT 150 home theatre system. This promotion only applies to the 50-inch model.
Legal e-gateway under fire
Gulf News reported a mixed reaction to the new e-gateway service launched by the Dubai Department of Justice last month. Many felt that the information on the cases was too brief. But officials said that they had not received any complaints and that most advocates were happy with the service.
Samsung, first VGA-camera mobile
Samsung has launched the first MMS mobile phone to be equipped with a super-VGA digital camera, the SGH-E700. It will be available in the UAE from next week but camera phones are banned in Saudi Arabia. The handset weighs just 85g and also has GPRS, WAP, internal antenna and dual colour LCD screens.
Tejari auction saves Eritrea money
African nation Eritrea has saved more than 30 per cent on the cost of sourcing 2,000 PCs and monitors and peripherals by using the Tejari.com electronic marketplace, said a statement. President Isayas Afewerki said Eritrea's partnership with Tejari showed his country was committed to more efficient and cost effective government.
EDC, five new GSM deals
Emirates Data Clearing House, a subsidiary of Etisalat, has announced the signing of new agreements with GSM operators China Mobile, Celtel Uganda, Celtel Sierra Leone, SNPT Comoros and Vodafone Albania. Under these agreements, EDCH will provide the five operators with services ranging from data clearing and financial clearing to TAP conversion services. These agreements bring the number of EDCH clients to 40 GSM operators.
EIM, Ramadan online events
To bring Ramadan events and literature closer to the community, Emirates Internet and Multimedia is to host a range of related web sites and resources on its Albahhar.ae portal. These will include a live video stream of this year's Dubai International Holy Quran Awards, and access to an online site dedicated to the Holy Quran and related topics.
