W-TV for Kuwait mobiles

Wataniya Telecom today launched W-TV, the first video and live camera streaming service to mobile phones in Kuwait. Between 300 to 500 customers will be provided access on a trial basis over the next 90 days. The trial period will be used to measure customers' feedback on W-TV's content, look and feel prior to full launch in early 2005.

Nokia, USD120m Libya deal

Nokia has won a USD120m deal to supply GSM/Edge and WCDMA 3G network equipment to the Libyan General Post and Telecommunications Company for a new nationwide mobile network. Nokia will be the main supplier of the new core network and half of the radio network. This is Nokia's first network deal in Libya.

NBAD chooses HSBC system

The National Bank of Abu Dhabi has implemented the OpRisk Manager from HSBC Operational Risk Consultancy, supplied by Euro Banking Solutions, as part of its structural changes to comply with the regulatory requirements specified by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision. The bank said this gave it a lead position among regional banks in satisfying the Basel II regulations.

Housing Bank, MTC-Vodafone deal

Bahrain's MTC-Vodafone has announced that The Housing Bank signed up for the Private Mobile Network corporate package for its mobile communications services. This new solution allows The Housing Bank to build its own network within the MTC-Vodafone public GSM network.

Etisalat targets Asia, Africa

Etisalat is looking for overseas expansion in Asia and Africa after its success in Saudi Arabia. Officials said further announcements would be made early next year. Yesterday saw a huge response to the opening of the initial public offering for shares in the new Etihad Etisalat mobile phone company in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Data slashes prices

Saudi Data, part of the Saudi Telecom Company, has slashed prices of its four main services - Saudi Data Digital Leased Lines, Saudi Data Framework Relay, Saudi Data ATM, Saudi Data IP-VPN. The price reductions that will be effective beginning next year range from 10 to 20 per cent on speeds below two megabits per second. For higher speeds the cuts are up to 35 per cent.

Intel axes top-speed PC chip

Intel has cancelled plans to introduce the highest-speed PC computer chip, reported Reuters. Intel is to shift resources to its dual-core project which uses two chips in one package. Dual-core chips have advantages in multi-tasking such as playing music and making a video at the same time.

CA promises selective solutions

Computer Associates, the US software giant recently established under former Intel boss Gilbert Lacroix in Dubai, has promised to be selective in the roll-out of its product portfolio. Officials pointed out that CA has more than 1,000 products so the approach had to be highly segmented. CA plans to have a network of regional offices by the end of the year.

Smart phones hit PDA sales

The introduction of smart phones with Internet access have kept PDA sales lower than expected in the region, reported Gulf News. However, officials from Fujitsu-Siemens see a double-digit rise in PDA sales with the broadening of its range. The AME Info website is available on PDAs.

PDAs for Dubai traffic police

Dubai police officers are to get PDAs with full access to traffic databases and the ability to issue fines electronically with the new system, reported Gulf News. The PDAs will be equipped with a camera and video which may be used as evidence in court as to why a fine was given.

Strikers turn off Baghdad mobiles

Mobile phone service in the Baghdad area ceased yesterday as staff protested against the kidnapping of two Egyptian engineers, Mustafa Mohammed Abdel Latif and Mahmmoud Turk, who were among six people from the Iraqna mobile telephone company abducted last month, reported AP.

Mobile payments first in Kuwait

M-Net for Automated Banking Services has announced that it has acquired all the necessary licensing and approvals for operation in Kuwait, and is set to launch the Middle East's first and only widely accessible mobile payment services in Q4 in partnership with M.H. Alshaya Company, the National Bank of Kuwait, MTC-Vodafone, and the Al Roudhan International Group.

Deregulation leads IT expansion
