Motorola, 3.5G trials in Mideast

Mobile phone technology never stands still, and Motorola is promising Middle East trials of its latest 3.5G technology in the Middle East early next year. Officials said the system would offer high-speed data transmission but at a lower cost than 3G, and bring broadband Internet to mobile phones.

Gitex beats all previous records

The Gitex computer show in Dubai last week reported a 52 per cent rise in trade visitors to a record 114,000 people. Attendance at the parallel Gitex Computer Shopper this year stood at 108,000 compared with the projected 80,000, said organisers.

STC slashes prices by up to 35pc

Saudi Telecommunications Company has slashed prices by up to 35 per cent as it prepares to face competition in its domestic market for the first time, Reuters reported. Ettihad Etisalat, a UAE-led consortium, is expected to launch the Kingdom's second GSM mobile service in early 2005.

Software security spending up 25pc

Spending on security software jumped up by 25 per cent to USD53 million in the Gulf States in 2003. It is forecast to rise 27 per cent in 2004. According to a new IDC study, viruses, worms and spam pose the largest security threats to businesses in the Gulf. Saudi Arabia and the UAE ranked first and second in Gulf software security spending.
