HP attacks Iraq market

Hewlett-Packard has concluded a two day training workshop in Amman, Jordan, to introduce the company's product portfolio to resellers in Iraq. The event was modelled on the popular HP Academy. Director Hazem Bazan said the event was targeted at maximising awareness among the reseller community in the new market of Iraq, and providing them with adequate information.

Sun set to shine at Gitex

Sun International will mark its new regional expansion strategy with a return to the Gitex computer show in Dubai next week, and is taking a large stand opposite its main competitors. Sun has recently moved 150 staff into its new Dubai Internet City headquarters and can boast a 50 per cent surge in regional revenues in Q3 2004.

Nokia wins Bahrain 3G deal

The world's largest mobile phone maker Nokia has won a third-generation radio access network expansion deal from MTC-Vodafone Bahrain for an undisclosed sum. With this expansion MTC-Vodafone will be able to offer 3G services nationwide by the end of 2004, said a statement.

Online spending up 60pc

Online spending surged by 60 per cent to USD78m in the Middle East last year, according to data from Visa International. Net turnover was up 69 per cent in the UAE to USD37m, 59 per cent in Saudi Arabia to USD17.6m and 57 per cent to USD9.7m in Kuwait.

UAE, new offers on broadband

Etisalat is promoting several offers which lower the cost of installing broadband Internet access. There is 50 per cent off the monthly rental for three months for a 256k connection and free installation. But broadband remains much more expensive in the UAE than in Europe.

Mideast IT market to double

The International Data Corporation predicts that the Middle East and North African region is set to grow from USD6.9bn in 2003 to around USD13.4bn by 2008 with particularly marked increase in both Saudi Arabia and the Maghreb. The MENA region is currently the third fastest growing IT market in the world after India and China.

Etisalat subsidiary eCompany has launced its Dial Virtual Port Services that allow businesses to provide remote Internet access for their employees. Firms pay a fixed monthly rent for the number of virtual port pools subscribed to, Dhs400 per port.

Wipro, bigger DIC offices

Microsoft, education the key

Microsoft General Manager for the South Gulf Abdullatif Al Mulla told Gulf News that the US giant sees education as a force driving regional IT growth. Speaking in the run-up to the Gitex 2004 computer show in Dubai, he said my aim is to see students researching the Net as a tool, teachers connected and university students tapping into technology in learning.

Oman Mobile, WAP, MMS service

Oman Mobile has unveiled its GPRS service, Taif, that enables GSM mobile phone users to connect to WAP and MMS services. The service is presently only available to post-paid subscribers but will be extended to pre-paid users shortly, said officials.

Microsoft, DIC Technology Centre

Microsoft has launched its Technology Centre in the Dubai Internet City. The USD1m centre is the first of its kind in the Middle East and allows customers to test any applications and customisation. There is also Arabisation available courtesy of the resident team.
